"I just had to put this in - a truly amazing story.
Fayhan al-Ghamdi (google him) is a Saudi TV preacher. He thought his five year old daughter wasn't a virgin. So - he raped her repeatedly, tortured her by burning, then beat her to death. The judge sentences him to a FINE! About $50,000 to the mother of the child (he had sole custody after the divorce) and time served, a few months"
And where is our "compassionate, liberal crowd." Certainly on some Flotilla. Pure, undiluted evil.
dr anna, a Social Democrat, hating political bigoted prostitutes
So called "compassionate" non-Zionist, Noach, why don't you, visit Syria, Egypt, Muslim slaves in oil rich countries, graves of women stoned to death for being raped etc.
Illiterate, moronic, indecent demagogue.
Mary from Danbury,
Why don't you check the salary of the CEO. A new Presbyterian Hospital CEO's basic salary is $10 million. No, he isn't a physician.
You, so called non-Zionist, translation a sick antisemite pretending to be human. Antisemitism is an area of my expertise, so don't you dare to start babbling ...
Jews are Zionists by definition.
Obama has done enough for the disintegration of the world. The world won't survive for more years of the master charlatan.
He won't last till the end. The last time I checked, treason was an impeachment offense and all his friends, such as Ahmadinejad and Putin and all his "flexibility" won't help him. America will never be an Iranian province. Forget about it and tell your master to forget.

I agree with the first part of your statement: Teachers should indeed be subject to rigorous evaluation and face the threat of losing their job if their performance is found unsatisfactory.
But subject to "market forces"? Whether education, healthcare, electricity, etc., the standard and criteria should be how well they serve the _public good_, not "market forces".
No man is an island.
@ Edward from Washington Heights, Re: Al Sharpton:
I agree that it is incredible and outrageous how Sharpton gets a complete pass for any number of statements and actions that he has made in the past.
To the best of my knowledge, Sharpton has NEVER apologized for or in any way rengeged on his role in the Tawana Brawley libel against Steven Pagonas.
Here is just one of a number of choice statements that the very right reverend made back in his less PC days:
"We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it."
Google "Sharpton greek homos" for citation, and much more, including videos.
Why does Al Sharpton, of the Twana Brawley hoax, the Freddies Fashion Mart, Crown Heights riot have a show on MSNBC?

Eliminate tenure for teachers.
Teachers must be subject to evaluation and market forces like any other worker.
On Al Sharpton's program on Monday or Tuesday on MSNBC they juxtaposed Cantor's language and speech with that of a speech by President Obama from Dec. 2011 (over a year earlier.) . . . If Cantor were my student he'd get an "F" for plagiarism. Not only were the ideas lifted, but the language was nearly identical! Just pathetic.
I believe Cantor has got things backward- the reason kids major in soft subjects like sociology is that they are (on average) woefully unprepared for college. Hard subjects like the sciences demand a level of college-preparedness that our public schools (again, on average) don't deliver.
Interestingly, the actions of the Republicans such as instistence on local control of education (aka keep Washington out of our lives), their anti-intellectualism, relentless promotion of sports etc. are precisely the reasons why we are not producing sufficient numbers of college-ready high-school graduates.
wow. HMJ Eric Cantor is going in the opposite direction!
Well David Brooks you can now officially join the democratic party; That will be the new republicans and the green party will become the new common sense party!
If Eric Cantor wants college students to have accurate information about job openings then he shouldn't suggest defunding social sciences. Social scientists analyze job availability and openings. Who does Cantor think will be at the bureau of labor statistics providing accurate job market data?
Why don't we provide FREE quality higher education to all qualifying citizens? (The way many other countries do)
Wouldn't that be an _investment_ in the future of the nation? (Since many of the students would go on to become _assets_ to the country.)
Liberal arts degrees are about the only guarantee of continued employment in tomorrow's economy. The proven ability to think critically and take action based on logic is the only tool that won't become outdated in the marketplace over time. Using degree programs to prepare for specific industries will get you hired but it will not keep you employed. Young Americans and the parents who are financing their educations had better realize that.
My sister works in a hospital that is cutting back on RNs but not LPNs (so going for lesser trained nurses). How do Republicans or anyone take a position on micromanaging choices in degrees and trainings when the market changes so fast?
The other night, The Daily Show played showed some clips of the president speaking last year, followed by Cantor saying almost the exact same wording in his speech this week. Expect the GOP to change its moniker to The New Dixiecrats by the end of the year.
On his trip to Israel, the President should:
- Put down an ultimatum: A complete freeze ALL settlement construction in the occupied territories or U.S. funding and other goodies will start to dwindle.
- Visit the occupied territories, including the refugee camps, and see how the Palestinians are living.
