Relatives comforted each other at Ronald's vigil.
WNYC reporter Kathleen Horan talks about her reporting project, "In Harm's Way", profiling the lives of every child killed by gun violence in New York City.
@RUCB_alum I'm with you 1000 percent.
The source of every death here IS NOT a child who would otherwise been aborted...and every gun used is not an illegal gun. Handguns are too prevalent in our country. We could cut the carnage in half in a generation by taking a few steps that limit few citizens legal right to 'keep and bear'. We could limit the domestic manufacture, importation, sale and transfer to individuals who are legally permitted to own one AND have passed a gun safety course. We could require liability insurance for the accidental discharge or unintended shootings that occur. And we could require criminal 'accessory' prosecution of the registered owner for gun crimes committed by weapons that they were supposed to have secured.
The NRA could get on board and help to make sure that the individual's gun rights were not broken and their responsibility to protect the rest of us from illegal weapons and unauthorized use of licensed weapons is increased. But they raise more money by scaring their members.
It takes five years of normal membership to become a voting member of the NRA. [You could vote in the next election by becoming a 'lifetime' member but that costs $1,000] Anybody with me in occupying the NRA and changing the board's composition in six or seven years?
@john from office: Do you know everything about the slain children's parents? Not every person who lives in a bad neighborhood is a bad person. They probably don't have the opportunity to leave the place they live in, even if they had an adequate education. Sadly, your bigotry has blinded you to that fact.
When your guest Katherine used the word "delicious" it sent a pain through my heart as I have used that adjective to describe my own children hundreds of times. These kids are all our kids, could be any of our kids. Amazing reporting - she has my deep admiration.
But of all these tragic deaths (at the hands of criminals) how many of these guns were illegally obtained? I don't know that more gun laws will help here. Further, what is the number of children killed by other means (hit and run drivers, knives, beating?)
The sad news is, there are people out there who are killers. Is this really a gun discussion?
This is absolute top notch coverage of a silent tragedy that is present across this country. Thanks to WNYC and Kathleen for being pioneers in adding flesh, dignity and depth to what has been too often covered modestly as just another statistic. Her sacrifice for all of us is awsome and rich. If we don't get it from these stories, then we are beyond deaf as a culture.
Brian hits it on the head...It's not about gun control, it's about about gun regulation via registration.
The true tragedies are the thousands of brown and blacks kids shot and killed by ILLEGALLY bought hadguns, not the occasional, albeit tragic massacre, caused by a lunatic with a so-called assault rifle at an affluent suburban school?
If Obama really cared about kids, he would switch focus to universal gun registration and not his silly, reactionary "assault" rifle ban.
This is the best argument for abortion. These kids are not wanted nor are the raised by loving parents. They "care" after the the death. "admitted gang member", two jail sentences. Come on. Where is the parenting of the Shooters??
Hey Mom I carry a hand gun, Ok my Boo.
The average number of people killed in mass shootings, when stopped by police, is 14.29 dead. The average number of people killed in a mass shooting, when stopped by a citizen, is 2.33 dead. The average number of people killed in a mass shooting, when stopped by an unarmed citizen is 2.6 dead. The average number of people killed in a mass shooting, when stopped by an citizen with a gun is 1.8.
So the best way to prevent mass shootings with many dead, is to enable armed citizens to be in most crowds. This is best accomplished by allowing the law-abiding to carry guns.
It's wonderful that we miss these children and want to limit gun violence. Would that we would extend our concern to the unborn also.
It's such a shame that these children are dead as some wing-nuts carelessly hold the Second Amendment like if it was the Bible.
Slate magazine, "Gun Deaths Since Newtown".
Thank you for documenting these murders.
