...somewhat superficial: farewell to raised sweaty underarms and goodbye to all the feet that were not sandal ready on my daily commute!!!!
1. The East Village is even noisier and more crowded at night as the NYU, SVA, Cooper Union and Pratt students return and all the Bridge and Tunnel kids come here to play with them. I am a "townie" once again.
2. No more A/C, so my Con Ed bill will go down (hopefully).
3. The days are still warm, but the evenings are cool, so the last few nights I forgot to wear a sweater and now I have a slight sore throat.
4. Flu shots are available (re a caller). CVS asked me if I wanted one, free.
5. I can now go hiking in the cool woods.
Mallomars have returned to the supermarket...hooray !
I know fall is here when I and the rest of the resident New Yorkers can enjoy our parks and streets again. Summer tourist season is over!!!
Fall is when the Oktoberfest beer hits the taps.
The squirrels are becoming very active.
We have a huge oak tree in our back yard, and the sound of the acorns falling and banging on the roof and the grill is a sure sign of fall!
Flu shots---got mine already. They have been out of sometime.

I walk the backcountry and 9A's morning rushhour locks to a standstill on the first week of school. Each year, every year.
... and my local A&P had pumpkin pies out last weekend in the dessert section!

You can never have too much pumpkin.
First sign of fall to me is when I finally have to lower my wide open windows overnight, when they haven't been down for months.
Also comes a day when you have nothing to wear becs closet shelves are full of not quite right clothes.
The smells in the breezy air. Each season has its smell. The students all return to school. Folks with light jackets and sweaters. In early fall the occasional falling leaves.

Dodging school buses on the race to drive my husband to the Staten Island Ferry.
- It's cool enough to sleep with no a/c on and a light blanket instead
- The premiere of all the new TV shows
- The "Fall preview" issues in so many magazines about the upcoming new movies, theater, etc.
This is my absolute favorite time of year because it means the dreaded heat & humidity of July & August are gone, and now we can live in anticipation of Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
When I can finally turn my space heater OFF in my over-air-conditioned office in midtown.
Parking! We loose a lotta parking alternatei side of the street spaces we had this summer as schools, etc. reopen
the San Gennero Festival around the corner is my sign that the end of summer has arrived.

to me is the bright sun on a Weekday morning and you don't want to get up since your bed feels warm and when you finally get up and into the shower the water takes a while to warm up.
The disappearance of short shorts....
My cat wants to sit in my lap again.
I live among oak trees and it's Fall when the "sorties" of acorns hitting my roof start. The 24 hour a day "nut bombings" have begun.
The humid haze in the air dissipates and colors are crisper and brighter.

-It's now dark when I feed our livestock in the morning and I need a jacket.
-The last sweet corn is being harvested and feed corn is starting to senesce. The apples are coming in.
-The deer are becoming more active. The rut will begin in a few weeks. Be careful driving.
That "pep in your step" tinge of chill in the mornings.
Waking up to complete silence in a bedroom with the windows wide open. No buzzing insects, singing birds, rustling tree leaves. Nothing.
When the stores put the chri$tma$ stuff on sale
