Perhaps the confused caller was thinking of W.G. Sebald's Austerlitz?
I take exception with Mr. Auster's comment on the Bush/Gore election results. Gore did not "win" the election as he claimed. Although Gore did have more popular votes than Bush, it was Bush that in fact won the election. Bush fought harder to win and Gore just gave up.
Fantastic interview, especially the segment about translations. I'm a French/English translator and I'm glad to be able to make French authors known by the English readers.
Is it really necessary to keep making fun of the woman who mistakenly attributed the wrong story to Mr. Auster? No one is perfect. This seems needlessly mean spirited.
Is Auster complaining because he's been so damn lucky in life?
Now I am dying to find out what the name is of the short story about the couple who went to the opera. Any ideas?
Really? That's not what I hear. The "I" you're all complaining about struck me as an "I" whose suffering stems from empathy with all beings. Hardly an egoist
I listen to a lot of BBC News, I appreciate how they interview w/o a fawning tone of voice. I wish BL would practice that.
Although I don't have an issue with Mr. Auster's political views.
On his last comment, what did we expect after WWII, which closely followed a world-wide depression?
What did we know? What did we have? Millions of refugees from all over the world? The displacements were huge.
But we DID have great Jazz!
1980 - "pre-gentrification" in Park Slope? The 1970s was the decade of gentrification. By 1980, house prices had more than quadrupled from 1970 and finding a run down fixer-upper was a real challenge.
don't leave out racism in the 50s
Yes, now I am going to cry, you are so right that NOTHING has changed. Bravo, we are still ok but we're by no means the "best" country in the world. That kind of thinking leads to collapse. Ask Rome!!!
I did not realize the earth revolves around this guest. Thanks for letting me in your world. Favorite word is I
WOW, the vietnam generation is so self centered. The ME ME ME generation.
.... let alone having the means and/or wherewithal to move to Paris at that age!
Suffocating to be in Columbia U during the Vietnam War?? What about those men who was not fortunate enough to be in college, let alone at an Ivy League university?
