Open Phones: Other News?

Friday, November 09, 2012

For the past two weeks, we've been focusing on two big stories--Sandy and the election. We want to know what other stories you've been following--not related to Sandy or the election. Tell us what cut through all the storm and voting news for you. Call us at 646-829-3980.

Hey Listeners! Here's some sort-of Sandy related (and at the same time NOT Sandy related news):
DOC NYC Film Festival is happening now and tomorrow night is the World Premiere of Zipper: Coney Island's Last Wild Ride. A film that examines the rezoning/redevelopment of Coney Island told through the lens of Eddie Miranda who owned and operated a Zipper ride. As regular listeners will surely recall, Brian covered the rezoning process extensively a few years back. As you may well imagine, it is nearly impossible to promote a film with everything going on right now and yet, sadly, ironically, poor Coney Island can use all the attention it can get!
Thanks!

Imagine if a bunch of young Palestinians "self-immolated" to protest the occupation of Palestine? Just think of what your response would be then. Sick of power hunger nationalists pressuring naive kids to kill themselves to score cheap political points.

Happening now: Thousands of Tibetan students join protests in Rebkong "TIBET". The RTYC of NY/NJ is organizing an emergency protest at the UN in New York City in solidarity with the protest in Tibet. What we would not know what might happen to these student protesters in times to come. So if any one who supports human rights around the world wants to join in please do so. Your voice will be appreciated. You can check this link for detail smuggled out news.

Hi Brian…

You've truly been a godsend during this turbulent time for all of us…thank you!
How about the voting down of the GMO bill on the west coast? This was buried in the election coverage. Very, very important.

I haven't heard any media outlet mention this, but as of last night, MTA vending machines in the subways have NOT been able to accept credit or debit cards since the storm. That means, in order to purchase a monthly unlimited metrocard, you need to pay $104 in cash at the token booth.

If you lose the card before the 30 days expire, you will not then be able to file for a partial credit from the MTA as you would if you used a credit card to purchase it.

Why it THIS functionality taking so long to bring back?
