Editorial director of the Sunlight Reporting Group, Bill Allison, reviews the effect of outside and dark money on this election, and what it tell us about Citizens United's impact on democracy.
This is the wrong segment - it's a repeat of the LIPA segment.
More on why "nothing changed" is really not an appropriate way to asses this election (and why the failure of the waste of Big Money on the right makes this even more impressive):
Please talk about who got the six billion. Media subsidiaries of media and chemical conglomerates that own subsidiaries that make oil based products - plastics, drugs, news, they paid themselves laundered through the election.
First, $6 billion is a trivial amount to spend on a process that affects a $15 trillion GDP. Second, six times this amount is spent on dog food alone in this country. If money actually did determine who was elected, that would be proof the average voter is an idiot - not a great argument for democracy. Progressives, stop the kvetching.
I very much agree with XTina! Please stop saying nothing changed. We also had big wins for women representatives. This increase in number of women in the house and senate is a big deal.
That said, this election was clearly an enormous waste of money -- and an alarm call to overturn Citizen's United.
the PUBLIC AIR WAVES should be returned to the people!!the over the air broadcasters are suppose to provide a service to the people not the super pacs
I don't know ...Karl Rove's ("Oh,sh*t! I didn't cage enough votes to get it done.") meltdown on FoxNews was pretty good. Maybe not $6B good but thoroughly enjoyable.
That and Megan Kelly's "Is this just math you do as a Republican to make yourself feel better or is this real?" is my new ringtone.
Strategically, the Dem's gained in the Senate and if GOP governors and legislatures hadn't gerrymandered their districts into Democratic irrelevance we would have the House. And Obama avoiding the attempted money coup d'etat works for me.
The spending of big money did make a difference. Even though the election this year shifted blue form two years ago the overall shift was red since 2008. The big money started going in about four years ago. And if the big money hadn't been spent this election would have been a lot more blue. lastly, most important, there is a substantial overlap between big money spent to shift red and big money spent to silence and depose politicians who might pursue action on climate change. Lesson Of Election: The Big Money Lost! . . . Or Maybe That's Pretty Far From Perfectly True http://nationalnotice.blogspot.com/2012/11/lesson-of-election-big-money-lost-or.html
The Rich Right spent all this money and what did they achieve: Maintaining the status quo, which means that they were successful at holding back a progressive wave that may have otherwise swept the nation.
Please stop saying nothing changed. The Dems got a bigger majority in the Senate and the Repubs got a smaller one in the House. The Dems defended many more seats and won, than the Repubs, despite the worst gerrymandering ever.
The voters spoke.
And since when is reelecting a president portrayed as not a referendum but 'no change'.
Please stop buying into all the MSM memes already
Sounds like TV station owners were the big winners.
What did money buy? a new economy - the Political Economy. It's the hot new way to re-distribute wealth:
Rich republicans hand over billions of dollars to Rove, and he re-hands it down to the pollsters, pundits, analyists, local tv stations, sign and button makers, and door-knockers. It's a great way to get million$ back into the hands of the middle class political workers.
what did the money buy? EGG on their faces linda mcmahon tried twice to buy a senate seat, but alas the GOP is still unviable in the northeast (as well as the west coast and increasingly the great lakes, u know the parts of the country where income is generated.) That “job creator” could not separate herself from the anti-science, anti-freedom, anti-progress, pro-hate GOP though she tried.rove is saying the BHO was able to suppress the vote with hate. Sounds like projection to me. im enjoying watching FOX news this week. they don’t get it! moderates have no place in the tea-bagger GOP. If I might make a suggestion to all the republicats who have been driven from their party over the last 3 years, its time for a new center-right party. The old one died from a tea overdose 2 years ago. Give up that rotting corpse, and start with a fresh page. The blue states need 2 viable political parties.
