Dan Rather Reports
Dan Rather, former news anchor for the CBS Evening News, current managing editor and anchor of Dan Rather Reports on the cable channel HDNet, discussses his new book Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News.
Dan was set up. More so than the earlier claim CBS wanted to get rid of him, the allegations that junior showed up at his sinecure bragging of drunken nights & being coked up were diverse. Smirking frat boy, swaggering, ever cocky in a flight suit, ready for his close-up, "Mission Accomplished" indeed. Then Karl Rove picked him up and we were off to the races.
Joe Jackson, Seems that you are upset that most Americans are not buying into your view of the world. Deal with it.
And if Americans cared what a British government declared, the US might still be a colony of Britain.
@Edward from Washington Heights --
Is the fact that more Americans are disinformed by a network that is run by a person the British gov't has declared to be 'unfit' to lead a major news gathering organization really something to crow about?
Lots of passion but precious few facts being sent out over the air from that channel. Don't get me wrong, there is no problem with being passionate...It's vital. However, if there can be no 'informed consent' if 40% of the electorate is getting their 'facts' from FauxNews.
Just here to add PBS NewsHour and Bill Moyers Journal to the list of things to keep the news vital.
The GREAT shows CBS did, like CBS Reports are now done by PBS.
Frontline, POV and American Masters and American Experience.
The CBS Sunday show is great too.
And ABC is the WORST - an electronic version of the worst of the NY Post.
CBS News has fallen. It is not what it was in the William Paley days.
Even 60 Minutes has fallen.
The old guard were the best.
At least we still have the great Morley Safer and great Bob Schieffer.
I can't stand Scott Pelly - too sanctimonious. Couldn't stand Katie Couric.
I did like Dan Rather - before he became the anchor of the Nightly News and changed.
Doesn't matter who the story is really about, the same people bring up President Obama in a negative and degrading way. I can't wait to hear the "concerns" after the President serves this next term. Let's see how critical and passionate about politics these same band wagon, followers become.
snoopy in BK.
The issue will be resolved on November 6, 2012.
Rev. Wright speaks - GD Americahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix-AMYos0Js
And some people will believe ANYTHING, like some of the identified hijackers of 9/11 are in fact "still alive" or other evil nonsense.
BTW, "FauxNews" has a larger audience than MSNBC, CNN, CNBC combined.
Ed, from Hudson Heights,I can't recall hearing any Anti-American rants from Rev Wright. I've heard anti-government rants. If the Rev. were white, he would have his own show on Fox.
I'm sorry that Mr. Rather still feels so badly about his final experience at CBS but I now feel, as a viewer, they did me a favor. I was never a fan of Rather's at CBS but I have become one during his tenure at HDNet. It's a shame this service isn't on more cable services because I believe that Dan Rather is now (in his 80s) doing the finest work of his career.
What I appreciate is how he's not locked into one format. If he feels that the best way to cover a story is to travel to some far-flung corner of the world and take a documentary approach, he does it. If a one-on-one interview with a (sometimes infamous) world leader, he does it. And if he wants to approach a story by having a discussion with a roundtable of academics, he does it. Indeed one of my favorite shows was his roundtable on the separation of church and state.
He seems to have more freedom to take what approach is necessary. I assume that some of this is due to spreading out a season's budget. But it works beautifully.
Indeed, as network and cable news are getting worse, "Dan Rather Reports" and it's companion show "HDNet World Report" are both doing some of the finest work in tv/cable news.
Calls'em, I actually think that going AWOL as an adult after avoiding serving one's country through the influence of a parent is more important that kindergarten school records, or, for that matter, travel plans. Further, I'm not convinced that there has been any cover up, whereas the Bush AWOL event has been pretty well documented.
Birthers, you really need to get a grip. Even if the fantasy that Obama was born outside the US (just like John McCain, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone), his mother was a US citizen and thus, so was Obama. Every time one of the Birther delusions is punctured, another comes up. Stop it. You are destroying America.
Dan we really miss you!
Hey, Edward in Hudson Heights -
Go back and listen to the ENTIRE post-9/11 sermon from Rev. Wright re: the chickens coming home to roost. You didn't hear what FauxNews and the media led you to believe.
I'm not naive enough to think that politicians ALWAYS tell the truth. I just have trouble believing that the GOP ever holds the people over party. Look at the Senate's record on filibusters.
Brian - Ask Dan which is more important, the alleged cover-up of Bush's alleged AWOL or the sealing and cover-up of Barack 0bama's educational records, which have all been sealed or the cover-up of other records and issues, such as how did 0bama travel to Pakistan when he was in college when he didn't have (or did he) an American passport and it was unlawful for an American to travel there at that time without a special visa. Thanks
Shannon, I think CBS wanted to get rid of Rather and figured that the faked documents were a golden opportunity to do it without getting into contractual issues and a big fight. The GOP helped CBS because they wanted to bury the actual story, which I belive was supported by the facts aside from the documents.
You are right, the silliness of the Obama birth certificate issue is a great example of how using faked documents can be ignored. The difference, I think, is that the birth certificate issues is knowingly and wholly manufactured and used by "journalists," whereas the Bush documents were a genuine error.
are we in Afghanistqan to guard Pakistan atomic arsenal against predators like al qaeda?
Perhaps you believe Mr. Obama when he said that after spending 20 years in Rev. Wrights church, Mr. Obama never heard any anti-American rants from Rev. Wright.
Never heard it first hand.Never heard about it from his wife.Never heard about it from his fellow parishoners.Never read about it in the church newsletter.
Some people will believe ANYTHING - like the beautiful clothing the KIng is wearing, made out of the finest material.
Brian - ask Dan if he knew Pham Xuan An - a north Vietnamese spy in South Viet Nam, who seriously affected media coverage of the Viet Nam war, and if so how did that relationship - with Dan or other CBS correspondents affected their coverage or perceptions of how the war was going? My point being that we won the Tet Offensive, but CBS reported it as a loss.
Dan Rather was working on a deadline, only now it seems are supporting facts drifting in. 8 years vs 16 or so days is a big difference. I don't fault Dan further given he's paid with his job already.
The Brian Lehrer Show recently asked listeners, "What do you consider "unAmerican?" I think propaganda is unAmerican, and that Fox News represents the nearest thing to propaganda we have. Does Mr. Rather think they will eventually FADE, or will this trend get STRONGER?
Your 'legacy' extends far beyond the Bush incident for me. Thank you so much for the years of investigative journalism you performed that helped to inform the rest of us.

Is traitorous duplicity part of the GOP standard operating procedure?
Reagan arms for hostages which kept American citizens captive until his inauguration
LBJ illegal wiretaps of Nixon that pointed to him tampering with the Paris Peace Talks
Gearing up to fight Saddam and the Iraqis when their offer to go into exile is on the table.
Republicans as individuals are fine people...As a party I can no longer trust a single word they say.
Q. What's the Frequency?
A. 820 AM.
The focus on the apparently faked documents really misses the point.
First, as Rather points out, Bush got out of Vietnam through his father's influence, and second, he didn't even show up to his sinecure. The documents aren't needed to prove that.
More importantly, an error on the part of a news organization should not turn people's eyes away from the fact that the Bush administration lied about Iraq, getting us into a war where thousands of soldiers and civilians who actually served in combat were killed and injured.
The IRONY of Dan's treatment over these facts and the very recent questioning of Obama's birth certificate. It is insanity
As a freelance still photographer for CBS News for 20 years I had the honor of working with Dan in Cuba covering Fidel Castro , and at a number of national conventions and general Evening News coverage. I always found him to be a gentleman and very honorable. Cheers to Dan it is good to hear him on the airwaves.
Dan,Did you ever report of the pipe line being built across Afganistan by UniCal. The corp. that Pres Karzi consulted for. And the story behind the Bush administration and the oil interests and the Afgan war that Obama is continuing but that no one ever talks about on main stream news?
The Soviets would have modernized Afghanistan the way they did Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan etc, all muslim countries in the same region with the problems of Afganistan. The US has a horrible record on modernizing muslim countries. Iran and Pakistan are perfect examples of US inability to "get it" .
I would like to point out the 'smoking gun' document in the 'AWOL Bush' story is unmistakeably, uncontestably, a modern fake made with Microsoft Word using its default settings.
If Mr Rather continues to insist it has any possibility of being genuine, his credibility over his entire career is called into question.
