Animation is a pretty busy category but the film Rio was snubbed. It is absolutely gorgeous, it's technical, and it has an oscar-attractive theme on animal poaching. Sure the field is pretty full this year but beyond Tin Tin, Rio stands up very well.
The opening scene music is up for best song and that's great. Sergio Mendes and John Powell certainly deserve it for their work. The film was an experience because of the music. I hope they win.
Oh and Rio was made by Blue Sky Studios which is located a stones-throw across the Westchester/Greenwich border about 40 minutes north. It's neat having a high-end studio like that so close and I always wish them well. Maybe they'll get some oscar love with their new projects.
Shame - Best Director and Best Male Actor category. I wasn't excited about seeing the film but went because I'd heard some vague good reviews about it. After seeing it I immediately had to find out who the director was. Many of the scenes were beautifully shot. The acting was phenomenal.
P.S. Steve McQueen is a great writer too.
The Interrupters. Best doc -- hands down.
Andrea Bernstein started off her Oscars segment saying "everyone's a critic during Oscar season," but as far as I've always known (and I've worked in radio), it's not the job of the actual host/hostess to provide his/her own opinions during these talk-show pieces. Not once, but TWICE during this segment did Ms. Bernstein proclaim the animated feature 'Rio' to be "terrible." Isn't a talk-show host supposed to be the conduit for listener dialogue? Does Jonathan Schwartz go on air at the end of each year dissing certain artists' albums? No. If a listener hates something, fine, but I don't want to hear a "journalist" stating as fact that a film, album, art exhibit or anything else was fabulous, mediocre, or terrible.
The sound design for Tower Heist was really amazing. And all of the technical aspects of Pina.
And @GP thumbs up on Pariah. Sad it didn't get noticed.
India's Oscar film submission should have been "Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Dreams)"
instead of the dry, lifeless film that they presented.
Win Win was totally overlooked. Giamatti and Amy Ryan were great, and Bobby Cannavale was brilliant!

Terry Gilliam's THE FISHER KING!! Fantastic film, not even nominated. WHAT? They nominate "Bugsy" and not this??! Plus, Jeff Bridges should have been nominated as well! Hooray for the recognition of Mercedes Ruehl.
