Open Phones: What Made You Laugh in 2012?

Friday, December 28, 2012

For our final segment of 2012, we'll go out laughing. What made you laugh this year - conversations, videos, pictures, jokes, stories, movies, anything at all. Call 212-433-9692 or post below. Post your links, and we'll compile them on our blog!

Paulette from West Orange said the audio of two little girls interviewed by their father about a haircut made her laugh. It made us laugh, too. You can listen to it here.

I'm getting the feeling that all those comments about Ellis' "Casual" song are spam. Not cool! (Was really looking for some honest laughs on this thread)

The botched restoration of the 19th century Spanish fresco made me laugh. The subsequent parodies made me laugh, too, with the face pasted on the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper and others.

Also, have you seen Tim Ellis' Casual Pimpin' on Youtube?

I accidentally came across a little book, a satire called Daddy, An Absolutely Fake Memoir and it made laugh like hell. It just pokes fun at "us"--our screwed-up values and vanities and egotism and getting ahead, etc., etc., etc. I thought, this would make a reeally funny movie with Alec Baldwin as the main character!

this made me laugh, and, it was from a not very funny play, "Modern Terrorism, or They Who Want to Kill Us and How We Learn to Love Them. there's a young white stoner character & when he meets the middle eastern terrorists who are posing as regular ny'ers, he's making comments which can be seen as racist. when he actually realizes they are indeed bad guys, he says "ohmigod, you're terrorists! (pause) oh wait, that might seem racist.".

"Forbidden Broadway." Four great energetic artists and a game piano player deflated all the vacuous pretentiousness of the plays currently on the Broadway stages, from "Once" to "The Book of Morons (sic)." I will never be able to listen again to Judy Garland singing in "Meet me in Saint Louis" without the intrusion of their new lyrics: "Flush, flush, flush goes the toilette!" It kept me, and everybody else in the audience, roaring with laughter.

New York Burlesque! Who knew?
I went to a few shows a couple years back, and didn't get much out of it. This summer I had a chance to check out a few shows and am blown away by the level of artistry and humor. Producers Calamity Chang and Shelly Watson, in particular, put on hilarious shows weekly, both stage patter and burlesque acts.
I even went to a Game of Thrones based show without having seen the tv show and had a blast.

Kelli Dunham - Wisconsin niceness with New York city attitude. She's recently dealt with the passing of her partner to cancer. You'd think it'd be hard to find humor in that. Her humor may not be for everyone, after all she's also a professional nurse in addition to being a comedian that worked in Haiti extensively, so her range of humor is vast.

I was knocked out by the website that claimed to provide the details of the Romney tax plan. Any attempt to click "Details" failed, of course, because there were no details. (Same is true of Republican fiscal cliff spending cut plans, by the way.)

The same thing that made me laugh is something that makes me cry:

The Big Bang Theory

It makes me laugh because it's so funny; it makes me cry because the more people who don't understand it means the fewer educated people we have in this country.
