USA Today Washington bureau chief Susan Page discusses the latest from Washington, from reaction to the Sandy Hook shooting to a new counter-offer on tax rates from Speaker John Boehner.
To tie together a different set of issues on this segment, a friend & I were talking yesterday about the conflicting reports on the shootings in Newtown, & we both connected that w/the accusations against Susan Rice. The accusers don't want to acknowledge that the reports of various events were confused & that the info available was incomplete, even though Amb. Rice said she was describing only what was known at that point.
Why aren't gun owners required to have liability insurance for every weapon owned?
As the homicide investigator mentioned earlier, owners of guns that were legally purchased away from the state where the gun is used for the crime should be responsible for either allowing their gun to be stolen or accessory in the crime depending on circumstances.
The insurance industry is sure overlooking a rising market in not pushing ALEC & the NRA to get registration, safety & weapon security training, licensing & liability insurance through state legislatures.
@RUCB. Yes, Rice was used by Republicans as an Obama surrogate, but I still believe that her withdrawal and Kerry's nomination is part of a "grand deal" -- the deal is not merely about money. Kerry's nomination means that the Repubs get another shot at an important Senate seat. Brown may be a jerk, but who do the Dems have to run against him?

Assignment for a reporter: go through the process of being helped w/the background check via that gun sales website, posing as someone w/a criminal record or mental instability, & see if they try to get around the law anyway.
Walmart security guards are allowed to kill shoplifters, we know what side they are on. oh they sell assault weapons too? Who needs judges and juries or even police anymore. Just trust walmart.
I teach at Hunter College. Are we going to put armed guards in each classroom? Give me a gun? (God forbid; I've shot no gun except in a Coney Island shooting gallery.) People do have passes and do get through security checks at building doors.
What a crazy suggestion
To the last caller wondering about the NRA: It is not merely that the right to bear arms is in the Second Amendment to the Constitution, but that there are various interpretations of this right. We all acknowledge that it's there, but how we view it - and how we view its abuses - is quite variable.
Unfortunately, the NRA does have quite a stranglehold on American politicians. Only those with spines will be able to resist the kind of pressure the NRA can put to bear if they take a stand against individuals owning weapons. And, unfortunately, only if tragedies approaching last Friday's shooting in Connecticut begin to impact families of NRA members will they understand how opponents of gun ownership feel about the issue.
Re: the Susan Rice 'withdrawal'
My read is that Ms. Rice is being chased and disregarded by the GOP as a candidate for Secretary of State because of her role in carrying the supplied intelligence agency briefs on the origins of the attack on Bengazhi.
Carrying what turns out to be a false message supplied by the intelligence agencies to the American public....Sound familiar to anyone? Whose head will FoxNews go after next? Powell? The other Rice? Cheney? Rumsfeld? gimmeabreak. Please explain why the GOP should not be called on their hypocrisy?
The Chained CPI is a non-starter.
The COLA measure must be the CPI-E formula.
The current CPI-U/W formula doesn't even cover annual PartB/D premium hikes!
The Chained CPI is the formula from the Catfood Commission & that is the effective moniker of Simpson-Bowles/Pete Peterson Lobbyplex.
As much as I like Susan Page, her captive DC "conventional wisdom" is not up to the Austerity Bomb discussion as we watch the UK, Greece, etc. destroy their economies due to German/EU-imposed measures.
Scott Brown's pretty much trashed himself by running a fairly shabby campaign. Some MA voters are still behind him but there are many more that are not. Finding a Democrat would/could beat him ought not to be so tough. The hardest part will be overcoming Democratic voter lethargy.
Before the discussion starts -
Ending the Bush tax cuts for those at $250K and above raises, income tax from 33% to 36% for those under $389K. At $389K, taxes then goes up to 39.6%
A 'median' family ($51K) would throw an additional 31.5 cents to the Treasury for each additional dollar earned. 7.65 cents comes from their employer.
Don't forget Kerry - he is part t of the grand bargain - the Repubs want their Senate seat back and will run Brown against whoever - an unknown - is appointed, Maybe McCain's crazy old angry man act was part of the game plan, to take out Rice. Note that Boehner offered his first tax rate concession hours after the word was out that Kerry wld be the next Secretary of State.
There has to be some way of not allowing this issue to just be forgotten until the next time.
Parents all over the United States should consider keeping children home one day a week - i.e. every Wednesday - to force the Federal government to step in and end the availability of these assault weapons - at the least.
If the shooter's mother had kept her guns under lock and key, instead of letting her unstable son have access to them, she would still be alive today. So would all those innocent children and teachers.
Any gun owner who's gun is used in a crime should face mandatory jail time. This way the rest of us can sleep better knowing they are controlling their gun fetish. They can have their precious guns, but they better be d@mn careful with them.
