The SuperPAC Election
Pro Publica reporter, Kim Barker, talks about her reporting on the political activities of "social welfare" non-profits and how they're affecting the election.
Astounding disclosure failure. ProPublica is a 501 non-profit - one of the very entities Barker claims to be investigating. ProPublica claims to be non-partisan but has yet to find the issue on which they differ from the democratic party. A major contributor to ProPublica is George Soros. That is the same Soros who was a huge supporter of Moveon.org which in 2008 functioned as an arm of the Obama campaign.
This should be run in The Onion. Non-profit political group funded by left leaning organizations runs piece against right leaning non-profits - ends up calling for an end to its own funding methods.
I consider myself fortunate that I listen exclusively to WNYC and don't watch television, so I don't get to hear all these political ads. I am most thankful to public radio for that.
However, I will say that anything that any PAC or other group does that is deceptive in any way, such as collecting money ostensibly for one purpose, but using it for another, should be disclosed not only to contributors, but to the IRS. If they are mis-declaring income and expenditures, they should be sanctioned for how they are spending the money, as well as misrepresenting themselves to the IRS. We independent citizens would be charged with perjury if we tried that. Why does that not apply to 501(c)(4)s?
I am also beginning to believe that only individuals should be able to contribute to politicians. Only individuals vote, so maybe that should apply to contributions/donations. And no one should be able to contribute to a "political organization or PAC" - only directly to a campaign and the politican running.
Why can't some highly skilled hackers infiltrate these pacs and out all the contributors?
Ten years of "The Terrorists are coming! The Terrorists are coming!" was used by the so-called 'small government conservatives" to hamstring the IRS, the SEC, the FEC, FEMA and many, many other regulatory functions of the Federal government. We live in a kleptocracy. Making it an effective government will not be easy or short.
Under Dubya we got a government with all of the costs and half the services.
The Drug Cartels and gun traffickers as well as other mob bosses like Adelson are funding these front 501 organizations. People wake up and take back your country!
Why the heck isn't the IRS aggressively pursuing taxes from these 501(c)(4)s?!
