Liberals always point to "income gaps" or "wealth gaps" to explain societal problems. No question, that persistent unemployment will engender desperation that can amplify criminal behavior.

However, "Thou shalt not covet."

The fact is, there always was and always will be both poverty as well as a criminal class that will take advantage of poverty conditions to enhance their own. Poverty and crime will always exist side by side, but certainly poverty reduction and good policing can ameliorate the worst in both.

Young blacks will stop getting randomly searched when the majority of gun violence is not committed by young blacks.

The West Indian Day Parade is such a fun spectacle to attend; it’s really a shame that it keeps getting marred by reoccurring incidents of gun violence.

I have lived in central Harlem for 4 1/2 years -- there have been approx. 5 shootings just on my short block in that time (several have woken me up). Within two blocks of my apt. there have been another 5 shootings. More than half were fatal. Newcomers are shocked -- most of what we hear in the media is how Harlem is gentrifying. It is but that's not the whole story!

You do the stats - I would go out on a limb and say 99% of the shooters and 100% of the victims were either black or hispanic - (Here in NYC) it is not a coincidence.

We live near Brooklyn College, and there have been a number of shootings in our streets - many in broad daylight - within the past few weeks. We are told that many issues are gang-related and we are terrified. Seems to be getting worse.

I'm a white resident of Bed-Stuy. Gun shots in our immediate neighborhood of Madison St have increased greatly this summer. We had one week when kids were shooting each other close to our house 3 nights. We called the police and they drove right past the shooters, went to the wrong location, and did not follow up with us who called in the shots. One of the nights we called to complain that it took 20 minutes for the police to show up and they said "there was a shooting on Fulton St - it's Bed-Stuy, it happens." Meanwhile they got 35 new police officers. These police officers are not patrolling the street except to give a summons to people in for riding their bikes on the sidewalk (as happened to me).

The police need to get smarter about their jobs and have a much stronger presence (not harassing people). Stop and frisk is a violation of civil rights.

Millions of people, two knuckleheads and this makes the headlines...let's talk about the two men that were stopped illegally!! Stay on topic.

For the African American and Latino population, we are not in a recession, but a depression. And Bloomberg has cut police and firefighters in order to spare the billionaires (who trashed our economy) from paying taxes. People are kidding themselves if they think that crime is not going to rise - and rise precipitously. I live in a prosperous part of Brooklyn and already we have seen an enormous rise in break-ins and shootings - a woman was shot on my street last month. But don't worry, Bloomberg will flub the statistics and come up with some positive spin about what is going on. The reality though is that we are headed for Brazil, 1985 - a place where the ultra rich helicopter into work every day and the rest of the population is left to defend themselves. NYC has become a Third world country at First world prices; we now boast a wealth gap that is right in keeping with any banana republic in Africa. How proud we should all be.
