Quicksand: "Ramar of the Jungle." Anyone else old enough to remember that one?
This seemed incredibly inane and meaningless.
Who cares what this pompous person hates? What I hate are Roz Chast's pretentious "cartoons," which are about as funny as a dingy blank wall with a stain on it. Her frequently long-winded tiny-lettered sayings are not even worth the squinting and effort it takes to read them. A perfect example of the decline of the New Yorker cartoon under the current regime, although none of the other current cartoonists' efforts are as poor as hers.
Our generation is afraid of quicksand from the old Jungle Jim, Tarzan, and Shena of the Jungle shows. There was always a poor "native" that would get trapped in the quicksand as everyone watched in terror
I hate New Yorker ads. Have you seen this weeks? The models all look like creepy aliens, pages 2,5 & 7 in particular have REALLY disturbing looking people that make the average shop mannequin look natural. brrrrr.
I love the guy with the beret though, but that's a given; who doesn't?
I've never understood the appeal of this woman's work...I feel like it's some sort of big inside joke that is neither funny nor clever. I also hate how her cartoons are often seen as some sort de facto authority on what it means to live in New York...I'd prefer to see some new voices in the magazine.
Anyone else unable to open those cardboard cylinders that hold cinnamon rolls or crescent rolls for fear of the POP?!

quick sand: I watched this movie as a child where the character slowly drowned. I think there also was a scene in quick sand in Tarzan. ( the series)
I remember Lassie pulling someone out of the quicksand on so many Sunday evenings.

My favorite med advertised on tv is the anti-depression med that has the possible side effect of causing one to want to commit suicide!!! Uh, isn't it supposed to take away depression and make one NOT want to commit suicide? Am I wrong? And they say marijuana is bad for you? Why, it makes one hungry and giddy? lol
Re Quicksand...it was a staple of patter on The Munsters....grandpa was often threatening to trap someone it in.

As far as the medical profession is concerned, Roz is right on.

There's a reason why Ray Bradbury wrote all those disturbing books set in carnivals. And I get her point about balloons too. And Junket---ugh.
