Thank you for giving me an inspiring assignment to do with my illustration class at Kingsborough Community College. I'm not sure if we stayed on topic enough but we got a lot out of brainstorming and coming up with images for our ideas.

Astoria has three social clubs for Spaniards, El Circolo Espanola, Casa Galicia, and the Spanish-American Social Club. Most Spanish immigrants will come from Galicia, Spain.

If you want to discuss the conditions in which they'll be locking them up, you should come to the Essex County Freeholders meeting tomorrow afternoon:

"The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders’ Public Safety/Penal Committee...will convene a meeting on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at 2:00 pm...to discuss conditions of confinement for immigration detainees at the Essex County Correctional Facility."

So, if you fancy yourself a reporter, blogger, academic, or even just a concerned citizen, tomorrow at 2pm would be a most opportune time to experience the ECFs!

A number of African /immigrant news groups here in NYC can help WNYC make a story on the Liberian community or any other African community deeper, more nuanced, more meaningful to listeners. Is there one or more than one Liberian community in the NYC area? Who are the leaders? What are the social issues that beset the Liberian youth? Is the community active in Liberian politics? Are they for Ellen Sirleaf Johnson? What about the ethnic divide? Any help we can offer WNYC, we will be glad to do it.

Are you familiar with the work of Moses Jarbo, whose dissertation (social work, NYU) was on PTSD and war experience among Liberian immigrants? Is sample was drawn from the Liberian community in Staten Island.
