i live at the boarder to nassau in queens. all the local governments spend money before they had a crisis! they never learned to save on their budged.more than 50% could be saved on the traffic lights.only one traffic light per street is necessary, but there are few traffic lights? street lightning is another waste! we could use much less! the missing revenuesare made up by writing more tickets by the police!the USA looks pretty from space, what a waste.it only cost us money we borrow! at least 20% we could save?
does any one know what a county does in this state.why do we need town-county-state governments. could we try to get rid of 1 of the 3?

I am tired of hearing about revenues, we simply pay way too much for services (that means employee costs). It is so hugely out of whack with the rest of the country. We get very little for our tax dollars here. We DO NOT get some type of gold plated services. We spend too much on all levels of public services and people cannot afford it any longer. Unionization of professional municipal workers should be abolished.
Tell the truth -- the problems are:
- Unwillingness to stand up to the municipal unions
- Unfunded mandates from the fed and the state
I was born in Queens, raised in Nassau and moved to Suffolk by way of Virginia and Pennsylvania. Nassau County spends way more for the same or less than the other counties I've lived in. As much as I loved having a village government and a hyper-local school district, Nassau needs to consolidate a lot of its services and increase transparency, otherwise it's sunk.
Martin Nyc tried a few years back to cut the starting salary for cops. The quality of the new cops speaks for itself.
Despite the fact that Nassau County is the 3rd wealthiest county in the nation, has the 2nd highest average property taxes in the nation and a lower unemployment rate of 6.8%.....it's broke and getting more in debt by the day. (NY Post 11-29-2010, E.J McMahon, Manhattan Institute) Meanwhile, there are nearly 400 retired police officers who have yearly PENSIONS of more than $100,000 and the average county cop now makes $126,000 PLUS benefits.That's fine if the taxpayers are aware of this and knowingly vote for this largesse, but the transparency isn't there. The 2011 budget is "balanced" with the help of $61 million in union "concessions"...but the unions have already said that they actually won't accept this deal. What a farce. This dissembling should be illegal.
