Empire blogger for WNYC Colby Hamilton discusses this week's debate between candidates David Weprin and Bob Turner in the race for Anthony Weiner's old seat in New York's Ninth Congressional District.
Turner's proposed cuts do not include non-descretionary spending. Your criticism (really allegations) assumes they do.
QUOTEHow is it that Israel's interests are supposed to over-ride those of American citizens constitutionally represented by the elected representative?!UNQUOTE
It doesn't override them. But they are important to our national interest. Tell me the justification for the US to have fought against the Axis powers? What was OUR interest to fight that war before the attack on pearl harbor? Indeed, the American public thought as you do now, re Iran----that there wasn't a national security interest.
But while FDR didn't understand economics, he did understand that nazism and Imperial Japan were existential enemies of the US. And just like our democracy and freedom of conscience could not co-exist on the same planet with nazism, you fail to grasp that similarly, we cannot co-exist with expansionist shariah states like Iran. Their aim of "expansion" is ideological----religious conversion. Not physical takeover. But then what's the difference? Are we not "Americans" BECAUSE of our values, as reflected in the Constitution?
Congress reflected public opinion throughout the late 30s and early 40s, and didn't declare war until we were finally attacked. But ask your parents NOW, if it was wise for the US to wait until Hitler armed germany, and invaded its neighbors, or to wait until expansionist Japan---already invading China and southeast asian nations---finally attacked Pearl? They would tell you that we should have gotten into the war sooner. Less lives and money would have been saved.
People like you are fooled into thinking it's solely a religion, and that its at peace with secular governments. The mainstream religious clerics in current-day islam state flat out that shariah cannot exist alongside secular government, or within such a nation. Shariah is antithetical to our way of life. let's listen to THOSE muslims---our enemies---when they are telling the truth unintentionally (because other times they lie about their intent----lying to non-muslims being justified according to the koran).
That's why VALUES are everything in this world, and worth fighting for. It IS in our interest to defend israel and topple the iranian mullocracy, or at least disarm it.
@Brian from Hoboken
your figures on the pentagon budget are incorrect. But yes, i would favor discontinuing all foreign aid, and support for the UN!!
You really need to learn that most elected republican officials are not in favor of abolishing medicare and most local safety net programs. They are for saving it from insolvency, as they are currently funded in an inherently unstable way.
While government control over our lives is opposed by conservatives philosophically, you need to realize which issues they make exceptions for.
People like Dick and Lynne Cheney are are not elected, and are more an aberation to practical reality vs philosophy.
@ Hugh Sanson
Gary- if we cut 35% of the budget, are you ok with cutting all aid to Israel? God knows it costs us a ton of money to support Israel.
Last I checked the Constitution allows for freedom of religion so if someone wants to build a community center/mosque, they can.
Turner is flat out lying if he thinks he can cut the budget by 35% and not touch defense or entitlement.Defense - 20% of budget Medicare/Medicaid- 20%SS - 20%remaining social net programs - 15%So he can literally shut down completely the dept of education, transportation, EPA, agriculture, health dept, etc and still only save 25%. The man is delusional.
"He supports the Mosque at ground zero, built by open proponents sharia and defenders of Hamas."
The second part of this statement is a blatant lie put forth by the proto-fascistic extremist right.
If we take "gary from queens" as any guide, the one and only guide to voting should be the candidates' positions on Israel. How is it that Israel's interests are supposed to over-ride those of American citizens constitutionally represented by the elected representative?!
If Social Security, Medicare, and other 'entitlements' go untouched, then the cuts to other areas of the US budget would have to be cut by 50% — not 35%.
The Republicans and many Democrats (e.g., Leon Panetta) oppose _any_ cuts to the military. In that case, 100% of everything not military-entitlement or other entitlement would have to be cut.
(100% of Congressional salaries? Turner might have an idea.)
The ultra-right (including Dick and Lynne Cheney) has advocated, repeatedly, the total elimination of public education, public infrastructure, all so-called entitlement, all environmental protection, and on and on. If Turner is serious with his lunacy, then he is committed to this ultra-right position.
David Weprin hired Corey Bearak to conduct the dirtiest mud slinging campaign for city council 2 years ago against Bob Friedlich. Bearak was Councilman Sheldon Leffler's chief of staff for 30 years, yet claims to know nothing of Leffler's violations of campaign law that convicted him and would have landed most people in jail.
David Weprin is so soft on his defense of Israel, it's disgusting.
He's been silent on every assault on Israel at the UN, as well as Obama's pressuring of Bibi to make one concession after another.
He refuses to use US financial leverage on Fatah and PLO (to end incitement and attacks), and in the UN, particularly in the approaching unilateral vote for "Palestinian" sovereignty.
He was silent when Obama met with the Muslim Brotherhood and agreed to favor their ascension to power in Egypt and Syria:http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/274969/annals-arab-spring-obama-administration-backs-muslim-brotherhood-syria-andrew-c-mccart
He supports the Mosque at ground zero, built by open proponents sharia and defenders of Hamas.
He will be another disaster for America and a welcome member of congress by it's appeasers and apologists of sharia.
