Yesterday, the Senate voted against taking up a military bill that includes the DREAM Act and a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Ben Smith, senior political writer at Politico, discusses the vote and politics at play. Plus, your take on this morning's surprising Paladino-Cuomo poll - it's closer than almost anyone expected.

As a Vietnam Era gay veteran I'm really distressed by the discussions. At the time I was in the Army (1964-67) people still had problems having "ni***r" superiors and buddies sleeping and shower in the same quarters as they were. There was no concern by the military about their problems with a mixed-race army.
As long as there is no sexual harassment, untoward sexual activity on base, what is the problem? After all, that is the rule - one should not conduct one's self on base in an unsoldierly manner.
Discriminating against against what one IS is wrong, punishing one for one's unlawful actions is right. Whether it's hetero- or homo-sexual activity. Why is that so hard to legislate?
Rhetorical question - I know about prejudice.
Love WNYC and NPR - as long as you are there, there is hope.
Paladino is all about the upstate. New York city will be fighting him for years if Paladino gets elected.
Doesn't passing these bills now let liberals of the hook in November? Why should they go vote then, if they get what they want now?
Nobody is less charismatic than Cuomo, the sad thing is Patterson would probably beat Paladino but Cuomo won't - not that the Dems care, it's time to run the son of the great man and just like in MA the "Cuomo Seat" is practically guaranteed, right?
I am independent and I am angry at Albany and the political establishment’s incompetence, corruption and on and on. But I can never vote for a bozo who is a raciest, a masochist and peddler of pornography as governor of New York State.
Paladino makes Jesse Ventura look like a statesman.
"Dare you raise the issue of policy," Brian? Naah, just give us more of the usual horse-race blather.
when is cuomo going to start running?
looks like we have our mullahs here also
The bill also contained a part that would allow abortions at military hospitals.
