Ted and Cokie are allowed to opine -
Why not Juan?

Brian,
Will you be doing a segment on Juan Williams' firing? On journalistic objectivity and judgment and censorship? Lack of commentators of people of color on NPR? Racism and bigotry and "feelings"? There is a lot to talk about? Why the silence?
K Smith
Joel Klein, how exactly is being "fearful" about the "changing face of the nation" (and I ask this as the daughter of Gujrati immigrants who are not convenience store owners) not racism?
Melody: Exactly. And when I hear conservatives complain about things like progressive taxation proposals as "redistribution of wealth," I have to wonder why they didn't seem to have any complaints when the wealth was being redistributed in the other direction.
I'm sorry, I almost turned my radio off for the morning. This is what passes for journalism these days? Travel around the country, schmooze with people and then report back to the office to prattle on in a very ADHD fashion until time's up? Since when does "voters are fed up" pass as analysis? One of the guests noted that people are angry with journalists, and yes, they are angry with journalists because most of them are doing an incredibly poor job. How lazy can you get?
A real story, with real analysis, would have explained why the people you spoke with were somehow representative of some group that is impacting the election. A real story would have clarified overlap--is there any? I'm not sure--between the vast number of voters who seem to feel angry they didn't get anything in the bailout vs the vast number of tea party supporters who apparently feel everyone should be standing on their two feet. Superficial sentiments of many seniors were quoted by the guests, but there was no explanation of how these seniors reconciled their concern with government spending vs the cost of the medicare and social security program, which of course constitute the overwhelming part of the national budget.
A waste of time.
Becky
he's kewl too.
HJS - a nice sentiment - stated in 1968 - I am familiar. however - certain people have not complied with that notion. By the by- I of the Malcolm X persuasian sweetie!
On another note, I am a long-time WNYC member and supporter... and I would love to have Alec Baldwin come to my office and berate me! Why should all the slackers have all the fun? Seriously, what a great membership perk!
becky says "I think that "white people" should no longer be allowed to hide under that umbrella, they should be forced to identify their heritage in all conversations, written and verbal. That's is what I would love to see."
I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. MLK
Worst guests Ever Brian,
Just because these journo types went on a road trip doesn't mean they looked down on those "regular folks" along the way any less than they usually do or sought any deeper understanding beyond their own smug, built in prejudices. This skewed all left leaning panel of guests is just as bad as they accuse the Tea Party or Conservative types of being and makes NPR no better than Fox for bringing them on the program. Juan Williams got screwed. I am really disappointed.
Note To Self:
Why do you feel qualified to opine on the important issues of the day (and in such educated, not to say tolerant company) when you don't recognize the appropriate difference between "there" ans "their"?
Remember Juan Williams
Becky
BECAUSE Jeremiah Wright is also a "secret Muslim"?
I'm a secret Muslim. Don't tell anyone.
She should call it Mishagas in Michigan.
Here is what I propose....I think that "white people" should no longer be allowed to hide under that umbrella, they should be forced to identify their heritage in all conversations, written and verbal. That's is what I would love to see.
Oh yeah -
Remember Juan Williams.
I don't here anything I haven't already heard from aaaaaaaaaallllllll the other overpaid blabbing heads on aaaaaaaalllll the other channels and stations everywhere else. It's tiring. Why don't these folks get a job, a real job. YUK!!
How do you become a "secret Muslim"? Laughable...just two years ago he was "in bed" with Jeremiah Wright...hellloo NOT a muslim pastor...make up your mind which is it?
Gee
Chideya, Klein, and Lehrer want to know:
How can we spin this narrative to give these "ignorant rubes" a "progressive" solution to there baseless racist anxieties?
We want to know:
How can we be mad at the bankers when it was the government who declared them "too big to fail" and proceeded to use the public treasury to guarantee the bankers success.
(Of course the not so secret message to us was "You are too little to matter.")
Oh - you say Obama was only completing a policy that was initiated by Bush?
Well you can bet that I won't vote for that bastard this time, or any other time, either.
Why don't we ever hear Democrats running against "outsiders" from the business world pointing out that the way you can "creat jobs" when you own a business--by directly hiring people--isn't the same as the way you can create jobs when you hold gov't. office?
With their emphasis on "states' rights," I don't understand how they have any love of their country, period. How do they expect the US to retain any unity or consistency if the focus is the state level? For that matter, don't state governments still constitute government involvement?
Jobs were leaving (unemployment was at 9% during the bush admin.) this is not new. It is not a good thing but it is most certainly not new.
if people are mad about china who is shopping at walmart? america loves cheap plastic.
I think the Tea Party is just a new name for Libertarians. The “grass roots” segment is probably honest in its desires for smaller government and lower taxes, even though we’ve heard this same message for half a century. The awful thing about the Tea Party is the co-opting by the Koch brothers, Rove, Bechtel, and the rest of the right wing rich guys who just want a puppet government that will let them do as they please. Some of our fellow citizens have very short memories. Thank you Robert's court!
any sense among the people talked to that the economic crisis is world-wide? Any awareness of what's going on in France, in Greece, in the UK?
Can we get a show about NPR censoring and firing Juan Williams for voicing his opinion? No agenda w/ NPR huh? Truly disturbing that one who works for a "liberal oriented" entity is treated with a muzzle and sent packing. NPR are no better than Fox News. Agenda driven, tow the line horseshtt.
Yes, where was the anger from the tea party when Bush was getting us into 2 wars... and why are they angry with big govt, when it's corporations who are taking the jobs to lower paying countries?
Hi Brian -
Would you ask your reporters about the ignorance of the Tea Partiers?
The NY Times reported on the ignorance regarding climate change.
All you are doing is seeking *excuses* - anger, etc.
Let's talk about their ignorance and how much THAT contributes to the anger and the voting patterns.
the jobs are gone. profits are up. on a happy note if you have a college degree u have a job and life is good.
Where is the change? FYI...it is most certainly going to take more than 2 years to unwind the damage done by the bush administration!
Question? where was this tea party "anxiety" last two Presidential terms? Furthermore, where was the tea party two presidential terms ago? Let's stop making excuses for these racists!
Just this morning I donated to WNYC. Then I heard about Juan Williams. Can I have my money back?
The country is going nuts from so many quarters. With this absurd firing, NPR has joined the lunacy.
He said people who look a certain way make him nervous in certain situations. Who HONESTLY has never felt that way? HONESTLY. Whether one SHOULD feel nervous is another matter ... but admitting we feel nervous around that which we don't necessarily understand or feel able to trust?
Aiding and abetting Fox Noise was always a dubious act on his part. But this????
Shame on NPR.
