Our effort to spotlight some of the lesser-known films nominated for an Academy Award concludes with the film Which Way Home. Director Rebecca Cammisa discusses her HBO documentary.
I wish it would come to public light that the conditions these immigrants are fleeing are largely due to intolerable conditions put in place by years of US backed Latin American military dictators and US exploitation of Latin Americans and their natural resources. Additionally, the US squashed grass-roots political rebellions (Sandinistas) that would have thrown off these dictators from within. All in the name of suppressing 'communism' which for one thing it wasn't, and for another thing - we have supported far worse concepts than communism! I realize advocates like your guest need to tread lightly or risk estranging would-be supporters, but I am dying for some harsh truths to be told.
Cannot wait to see this. Thank you, Ms. Cammisa, for the idea and info. Hopefully it'll soften some hearts. It's devastating to hear hate speech toward immigrants - legal or not. (Especially when it comes from people whose grandparents came exactly the same way, but when the laws were different.)
Would also love to see a film splicing current immigrant stories with stories from previous generations of dreamers venturing to America. Would the haters then see kinship?
Sonia Nazario's "Enrique's Journey" is a well-written, very touching, fantastic book about this topic. Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Enriques-Journey-Sonia-Nazario/dp/0812971787/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267805589&sr=1-7

I personally think the immigration issue should have took a priority over the health care issue.
