TishTash, I didn't even mention Steinbrenner in my comment. I specifically addressed something Mr. Abdul-Matin said about the new Yankee Stadium. I certainly didn't pick anyone's bones!

My comment goes to all the negative comments. I say one thing: ye who has never sinned, cast the first stone. Judging from the superciliousness and pious arrogance exhibited here toward an imperfect yet by no means horrific person, the trolleys must all be Mother Teresas, Albert Schweitzers and Mahatma Gandhis combined.

Amy (#14): Geez, he wasn't perfect, but can't you let the dead rest in peace for at least a day before you start picking his bones like a whininhg hyena?

"Everyone's happy about the new stadium"?? I actually yelled at my radio, "No, we're not!" The ticket prices exclude many fans. The stadium was supposed to be built w/no public money, but it got tax breaks & subsidized services. It was supposed to revitalize neighborhood businesses, but people going to the games are funneled straight to the stores & food stands inside the stadium & never see the street-level businesses. And they tore down a park to build it--they were supposed to put a new park where the old stadium was, but you can't replace 100-year-old trees.

Some say how "Seinfeld" shaped their view of Steinbrenner. I always loved how Bill Gallo in the Daily News drew him as a kaiser! I haven't followed a game in years, but I still feel a pang over the Boss's death.
Auf wiedersehen, George

Brian stated that George Steinbrenner was from Florida, but I believe he was originally from Cleveland, wasn't he?

on lookout for subtle and sweltering homage by NY'ers to the Boss in wearing Blue Blazer and White Turtleneck on a muggy day in July.

Hopefully, Steinbrenner is resting uncomfortably in hell right now.

Always titling at windmills, I remember writing to Steinbrenner 25 years ago to say I was boycotting the Yankees because he broke his promise to the ultimate Yankee and fired Yogi 16 games into the 1985 season. I did not watch or listen to a Yankee game for the rest of the year. Yogi's boycott of THE Stadium lasted 14 years.

I hope you refrain from deifying Steinbrenner in death and resist the temptation to rewrite history.
He was an arrogant bully, dishonest and mean man who made his own rules, broke the law and used his wealth to destroy anyone in his way. From his earliest days as an owner of a basketball team in Indianapolis where he fired the grossly underpaid black players who protested the prejudice of poverty wages to his extorting Dave Winfield during a contract negotiation, to his illegal campaign contributions, this bully has finally met his maker. Good riddance. Maybe they'll rename the new Yankee Stadium in his honor - a tribute to excess and gross materialism encased in a concrete slab with all the warmth of a federal prison. Now that I'm thinking of it, it's the perfect place for him to spend eternity.
