Estelle from Austin : I am a type I who was not breastfed as are two of my siblings. I certainly do not place any guilt on my mother over this (or any other mother for that matter!)
There was this overwhelming movement to formula long before I was born and long before we understood the difference between mother's milk and other milk (namely the protien make-up).
There are formulas that now have less complex protiens that may result in less chance of diabetes - in fact there is a huge study regarding this going on worldwide!
This is not meant to make you or any other non-breastfeeding mother feel guilty. It is mroe a criticism of our food system (like putting soy in everything? Soy is not healtful unless it is fermented and we put unfermented soy in EVERYTHING - can't wait to see the health affects of THAT one 20 years from now!
The above comments are extremely sophomoric. The discuss has been focuedon type 2, but both types raising. Type 2's probelms have been food intake, but this doesn't explain the increase in type 1. If the above people listened to the program, maybe the lack of germs we're exposed to--that was explained on the show--is just as important as your diet.
Banting and Best began treating diabetes with insulin in 1921, won the Nobel Prize in 1923. That's when people with type 1 diabetes began to survive to reproductive age in large numbers. If there is a genetic predisposition to type 1, then Charles Darwin would not be at all surprised to see such an explosion of cases over a period of 3 to 4 generations.
Please note. Polio was not CURED, vaccine prevents disease from being contagious. There are many of us who had polio in the 40's and 50's, were blessed to live a full life but are now suffering from POST POLIO SYDROME
All diabetics should read the books by and follow the advise of Dr. Bernstein, a physician with Type I diabetes. He has developed a plan to ensure the proper regulation of blood sugar levels that results in substantially minimizing the symptoms of the disease. His advise is applicable to both Type I and Type II diabetes.
Please, no more villanizing of mothers who don't breastfeed; some of us do not have a choice but to give our babies formula, for reasons beyond our control (mastectomies, newborn in NICU, etc.), as much as we might long to breastfeed.
My sister-in-law recently underwent Gastric Bypass surgery. Her doctor told her that studies have shown that people who get this surgery have a great reduction in diabetes (even bef9ore the weight loss begins). She has the surgery and sure enough her blood sugar levels were better right away. Does he know anything about this?
Yes, High Fructose Corn Syrup [HFCS} is a likely culprit. READ YOUR FOOD LABELS!! In the 1970's the industrial agriculture giants set up huge factories in the corn belt to manufacture this synthetic chemical, very sweet, but unlike sucrose it must be metabolized in the liver and likely will not be all "burned" but some forms fat. The glut of HFCS made it so cheap that most food manufacturers substituted HFCS for sugar [sugar is made from cane or beet]. Especially check labels on "store brands" since they can be cheaper that name brands by using this substitute. Soft drinks use HFCS -- THESE should be banned and/or taxed. Educate our City, State and Federal officials and fight the corn lobby. See the documentary "King Corn" in your library.
Wouldn't you think that there is a diabetes gene that is proliferated due to survival of people with diabetes. The gene is associated with atherosclerosis.
If wwe never had treated diabetes then the gene might not have proliferated.
remember there is a difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes: babies can get type 1 and is not caused by anything the patient does; type 2 is often brought on by a sedentary lifestyle and obesity. Yet, guess what type is getting most of the funding????

hjs is correct.
Why the epidemic of diabetes? Stuffing the face with carbohydrates all day and night long, especially high fructose corn syrup.
ATKINS IS THE ANSWER! All the rest lie, lie, lie, and deny, deny, deny.

how about the mumps vaccine damaging pancfreas islet cells?

How about the fact that breast feeding took a back seat to processed formula?
Does anyone read labels? They put sugar (sugar, corn syrup, fructose) in everything! They'd put it in toilet paper if they could..

High-fructose corn syrup ?
