What exactly does it mean to be a foodie? Josée Johnston and Shyon Baumann, both assistant professors of sociology at the University of Toronto and co-authors of Foodies: Democracy and Distinction in the Gourmet Foodscape, discuss how the pursuit of tasty food can have some weighty cultural and class implications.

That was J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets!
SO annoying NOT "FO" but "FUU" Jesus, you wrote a BOOK on food, get some basics out of the way. Not every language is pronounced the way English is!

I also found the whole premise of "foodies" being culturally insensitive to be ludicrous. If anything we PROMOTE the continuation of cultures whose food might be lost as more and more generations move to western food instead of traditional.
daniel from queens, for the love of god, do you pronounce every dish the way its supposed to be in its original language? english is a different language than vietnamese, last time i checked... so obviously there will be different pronounciations of the word. do you get just as annoyed when people say manicotti instead of manigott? or however its supposed to be pronounced. how about moo goo gai pan?
what was that at the end!?!
Wait. I'm confused. Do foodies regale the "food of poor people?" Or do they eat $200 ham?
And what's the food of poor people? Didn't your previous segment say that poor people eat food that gives you diabetes - fast food, junk food, etc?
Oh, what to do... eat $200 ham or pay $200 for a hamburger that's socially and environmentally correct?
I may be a foodie... not crazy about the name. Can we come up something else?
PLEASE !Do those people understand what they are saying? Give me a break.Must be a slow news day.
Signed, a Foodie
where are those dinner party guests?
like to hear their comments on privilege and the social capital of foodie baggage..
Right?? I thought it was good to have highbrow and lowbrow tastes.
Chowhound already redefined the term "foodie" years ago.
definition of foodie: someone that hasnt found their niche in life yet, but thinks writing about eating is something only they can do. usually seen with either their noses in the air, or with a cheap point and shoot camera snapping pictures of the food on their plate.
oh for the love of god! im viet and its pronounced F-UHH not FOE! thats how you pronounce the Vietnamese noodle dish
It was tongue in cheek! Er...sorry, I meant beef tongue in hog jowl.
I think the term "foodie" is loaded because for some it may represent but yet another phase in American Euro-philia. Some self-awareness on the part of the foodie might be helpful for those tired of Euro-philia. Could you comment on that?
are you a "foodie" when you cant cook a thing?
Seriously?
Foodies are PoMo!
