Temporary Protection for Haitian Immigrants
Tuesday, January 19, 2010
On Friday, the Obama administration extended "temporary protected status to undocumented Haitian immigrants living in the U.S. which prevents their deportation for 18 months and allows them so be legally employed. Attorney Amy Gottlieb, director of the Immigrant Rights Program at the American Friends Service Committee, and Joel Millman, a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, talk about what the new status means.

This is a little late. BL asked if the TPS program legalizes someone who is undocumented. Yes. In order to qualify for TPS, one must show: 1) Haitian citizen and 2) he/she was in the US on or before 1/12/10. There are some exceptions, such as felonies.

ie america could easily help w that problem, so could israel, which literally runs profitable farms in the desert, without much water at all! and that country already trains 3rd world farmers around the world, for example:

isn't true that big argo business dumps cheaper US products into haiti, destroying haiti's own agriculture sector?
What happened to the mother of Charles Darvey (sp?)?
"soil too depleted to farm" no such thing brian
so long as there's water. much of america's farm belt is as naturally nutritious as the moon. factory farming is sustained purely by added nutrients.
Elaine, I hear you loud and clear. I'm afraid that Mr. Lehrer has lost his journalistic passion for the truth. He is getting older, he has a family too support. I apathetically accept his apathy...
hOW DO WE PETITION FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PIERRE PAN PROGRAM AND HUMANITARIAN PAROLE FOR ORPHANS
Can someone explain the history of the outrageous debt Haiti was forced to pay France since it's independence. How was this merited? Shouldn't France pay this money back?
The USCIS has also taking many other steps to allow Haitians who are in this country legally to extend their status and/or grant them employment authorization, not just TPS for out-of-status Haitians. Here is the link: http://www.uscis.gov/USCIS/Laws/Memoranda/2010/haiti-field-guidance.pdf and a post on my blog that explains these measures: http://bit.ly/7YZHDC
Cuba, DC, Puerto Rico, Caymans, Jamaica, Mexico, Turks and Caicos etc -- pls comment on how they are effected by haitian crisis and what they are or are not doing to prepare.
@ Concerned: On it's best days the country is a failed state with no infrastructure for it's own sewage or potable water, hence no organizational structure to distribute anything, not even information. That's why people and supplies are having difficulty getting to the people in need, military is needed for logistical organization and no doubt security. I seriously doubt a truck full of food water and med supplies rolling into a town will be met with an organized line, I'd expect the same in Greenwhich CT as well.
This is looting comment is really starting to irritate me....and no this is NOT just like New Orleans!
Brian,
My question is whether the U.S. did this following the tsunami in southeast Asia, the massive earthquakes in either China or Iran, or for any other country facing big tragedies?
I'm all for immigration reform, but any policy that says "yes" to one immigrant and "no" to another, teaches the world all men (and women) and not in fact created equal. That just isn't the American way.
Here we go again. Now Haiti is yet another country that America is occupying. This current opportunistic militarisation is disgusting. The US are PREVENTING!!! Medcins Sans Frontieres [my charity of choice in this disaster] from bringing in what is MORE NEEDED THAN GUNS, and that is doctors and medical supplies. Medical supplies are piling up on the runway but soldiers are making it to Port-au-Prince. The American media are in, pimping African suffering and privation and focusing on security where that issue is tertiary. They're exaggerating paltry and duplicitous American efforts while ignoring the massive Cuban presence who were helping Haitians BEFORE the earthquake. Meanwhile, Americans are sitting smug and superior thinking that they are helping these poor, poor people. These are the same Americans who deposed legitimately elected Haitian presidents, imposed kleptocratic dictators and STOLE Haitian land to give to American corporations. DISPICABLE! SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
