Eric Lipton, investigative reporter for the Washington bureau at the New York Times, talks about the ethics charges against Congressman Rangel having to do with fundraising for a City College educational center named after him, how common these kinds of donations are, and what an oil company has to do with it.

Here's the thing: the tax breaks for this company that fled NYC for a tax haven means the rest of us pay more.
Companies that abandon the US should not be rewarded; in fact, their operating officers should be stripped of US citizenship.
Now, when do we get cheney and bush on the stand??
Wow! good question Brian! The charges DO NOT make sense.
If he were a Republican, Brian would be foaming at the mouth.
roland the caller- i was waiting for someone like you to make this a racial issue. it is not a racial issue. ever hear the story of the boy who cried wolf?
It is clearly a matter of 'conflict of interest', whether it be a democrat or a republican who is involved in such fundraising or donations.
These donations should be regulated and made public like campaign contributions.
All congressman have approximately 80% of their funding from OUTSIDE their geographic area. This is a serious diminishment of voter influence since the big donor carries more weight than the local citizenry. This is the real story, not one person's misjudgment or his being different. He is the SAME as the other Congressman. Period.
Don't get me wrong I'm not exactly a Rangel fan, but the federal government seeemed to have a special desire to attack prominent black political figures. Starting with the charges against Marcus Garvey in 1920's, then to Adam Clayton Powell Jr. in the 60's and now Charlie Rangel. Should we really be surprised. At the same time, there are others in Congress, the Senate and the White House that are much worse.
Dick Cheney was chairman and CEO of Halliburton. After he became vice president of the U.S., and we went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, Halliburton got no-bid government contracts for billions of dollars. That's not corruption?
The Republicans can always find some reason why a Democrat is corrupt. Especially a black Democrat.
what will this say about voters in NY-15 if rangel wins in nov?
now can we get maxine waters to switch parties b4 the nov elections
