Newark is definitely on the right track, but peopl who, live here and deal with gangs and drugs on a daily basis are justifiably frustrated and impatient. I think the police and administration will do even more to deal with the crime if residents themselves come forward and turn in these perpetrators o crime. THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE BUT ARE AFRAID!!!

I have been living in Paterson, since 2002. Yes, it was once the "Silk City", and that is the story of Paterson. What is always talked about is what it was, and what it could be. There are great plans, that do not seem to happen.

Where you were dropped off was ok (not great, but ok). Paterson gets a bad rap, but [thankfully] is not as bad as it seems. The greatest issues, I feel, are inept and corrupt government, the schools, and a complete lack of anything for the youth.

It seems to be one of the few cities in NJ that isn't experiencing a rebirth, and I wish I knew why.

I believe that persons who have been convicted of felonies (of which there is a higher percentage in urban areas) cannot vote. What is the impact of this on elections in various cities/states?

I would say Brian is not asking any direct questions "john from the office" not sure if race has anything to do with it but as per usual here we go again with race threatning to take over a discussion.

I thought Brian's question was legitimate. If there is a role for government (and goodness knows LOTS of money goes into Newark already), why not ask the people who have "walked the walk" what resources they feel would help them (vs. the resources that mostly white middle class sociologists think would help).

Brian, please ask some difficult questions here. Ask her about being an unwed mother. Her boyfriend is a gang member. Ask her what is her responsibility to her self and to the country.

At the same time Jayda, it takes a stronger personality to deal with a teen with a strong personality and a desire to do the wrong thing(s) no matter what...some personal responsibility and plenty of good adult guidance.

What about Patterson? How is that city doing. I use to work in Wayne and took a shortcut through the outskirts of Patterson to get to I-80.

One time I was dropped off at the train station in Patterson and I have to say, it didn't look like a safe place. This was back in 2002/2003.

If tensions were elevated under Guilliani, how come there were no major riots under his tenure. You had riots during Dinkins administration.

Brian, please dont try to take advantage of the young lady because she is unable to articulate her point....you know as well as we all do that she is not saying that her troubles are solely a result of the non-government intervention...you asked her that question so she went to that direction but she knows, I know and you know that there were other mistakes made that led her and continue to lead youth down the wrong path. We can start with the lack of parental guidance and snowball from there.

The documentary is fantastic. It has been a unvarnished look at the city. What did Marc Levin think about amiri baraka really slamming Mayor Booker. I mean comparing him to condoleezza rice because he went to stanford, telling the people of newark to question Booker because he was the president of L'Chaim Society at Oxford...

Would Newark benefit with the Nets instead of placing them in Brooklyn?

The New York Times reported last year that downtown Newark is lacking bookstores. Has there been any progress in Maypr Booker's effort to bring a national bookstore chain to the city? It would both increase jobs and access to books and literacy.
