Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Five notable New Yorkers are inductees into the City Lore 2009 People's Hall of Fame. They join us as part of a week-long series.
Today: Michael Smith, carilloneur at St. Martin's Church in Harlem (he plays the bells). He is being inducted along with Dionisio Lind of Riverside Church.

The UAlbany carillon was just restored. As far as I know, it is an authentic carillon, not electronic.

Oh god you brought up Quasimodo!
This guy gets 100% support, Bravo!
I am an out of practice carilloneur, thank you for this story. Could you ask Michael more about the music he plays? I modify traditional church music. This is a great instrument for a shy musician.
I went to Alfred University which is known for it's carillon and I loved the sound of it as I walked around campus. Question: is there a delay between the "bashing" of your fist on the keyboard and the actual sound of the bell?
Brian, this is the first time you've encountered how a carillon is played?! Odd.
How do you practice?
