Is it the "Noughty-Aughts"? "The Era of Misplaced Anxiety"? The first decade of the millennium is ending, and New York Times reporter David Segal takes a shot at naming it.

This past decade could properly be called the TwentiOs. There is a facebook fan page for the name, and a logo. The logo is a Cheerio. The naming convention will also work in previous and future centuries if you read the info on the page. Search on Facebook for TwentiOs. Spread the Word. TwentiOs

Since there seemed to be a lot of mistakes made this decade.... including the fact that we forgot or couldn't even figure out how to name the decade....my suggestion is that we call it the "OOps!" decade. Simple.
Decade of the Reluctant Exspos'e
The Bait and Switch auts. Two presidental elections, the mis sell of the Iraq War as a 9/11 reaction, and the Finacial crisis. The Bait and Switch Auts sums it all up.
The Extreme Decade - or the double extreme decade "00"
It started with extreme politics with Bush/Gore election
Extreme fundamentalism and terror created chaos in our cities
The extreme military response in Iraq
More extreme politics/polarization
Extreme spending - individuals and gov't
Extreme weather leading to extreme suffering - New Orleans and around the world
Extreme risk taking
Extreme deficits
Extreme unemployment-double digits "double 00s
Extreme mortgage foreclosures...........
The Collapse Decade
How about the Aught Coms.
The ONLY NUMERICALLY & MNEMONICALLY correct choices are:
Aughties, Naughties, Naughts, Aughts or Naughty Aughties

I think of this past decade as The Mean Decade. I hope that all of the suffering it has generated might result in a complete reevaluation of our priorities. I'd like to hope that it will be followed by The Meaningful Decade.
iDecade.
The WeariOs.
We started the decade weary of partisan strife, which had consumed the end of the last decade with the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Then we were weary of the Presidential recount. Just as we began to get weary fo Bush's Presidency, we had the shock and infinite weariness of 9/11.
Throughout the entire decade, we became weary of war, jingoism, deficit spending, the Bush administration and the Republican party, power. corruption and lies, lies, lies. We were weary of economic collapse, the housing and debt bubble, bank bailouts, and the super-rich.
Now we are also weary of massive unemployment, impossible health care costs, insipid Democrats, even more war, bin Laden, and even hope itself.
We are just weary. We all need a long nap, some chicken soup, and along, calm restorative decade or two.
The WeariOs - the most exhausting decade ever.
20 O's - O for the zerO - Cubic Fit!
Count the O's, 20!
2001 - 2010. Not With Some Year 2000 Time-line Though.
You can't (cannot) regardless that nearly every one else it seems does.
There was nO Year zero period . Count them then from
Year One AD if you can and don't include a year zerO and you'll pass.
Pass to 2001 as this decade's first year to start you on your numerical epiphany.
If you can't, email me out on the wider web and I'll have my second grader count
them for you. I can't be any plainer. Nobody should have to.
Amy # 36 steps up the dialog here well and which overall although I wouldn't
want this hunt any other way than is as here today, our response proceeds here
as do all commentaries have on this story ditching the numerical moniker and
playing games with it.
Amy reaffirms my point that our commentaries don't require a numerical boundary but
must if, at all possible we first want to accept an alpha-numerical title other decades are know by.
You must get familiar with Twentyzeros.com
The Dumps
For the record, we didn't get rid of Bush. That's like saying Reagan got rid of the Soviet Union. I'm still amazed we elected him -- twice.
As for a name for this decade, words fail me. All I can say is if you liked this last decade, wait till you see what's next!
My suggestion is the Unies. Uni is a latin prefix that means one. It also means to come together to make one like university is a collection of colleges. The numbers between 0 and 9 are only one digit.
Unies is also used as in the sport world to reference uniforms for athletes.
Unies is also used for United Nations as in Nations Unies.

i'm down for either. :)

Elena from NYC is exactly right, it's the Disaster Decade: 2, count'em, 2 recessions; dot-com pops; 9/11; Iraq; the Indonesian Tsunami; the Kashmir Earthquake; Afghanistan; Darfur; the Congo War (5 million, yes, million dead); Enron; Katrina; housing bubble pops; banks fail; pensions gone; foreclosures; 5 million, yes, again, million jobs lost; the trillion-dollar deficit; The Great Recession; the torching of Borneo and Australia; and 80% of the damage preventable if it hadn't been presided over by the Disaster President himself.
I like the Zips, so far ...
But I propose ...
The OX's
(because we can kiss whatever good bye!)
The OY's (the O years) ...
(because there vas no vey ...)
SHOCK & AUGHT
or THE SHOCKIN' AUGHTS
The shock part is clear enough.
The aught (ought) part expresses
the current bankruptcy and transformation
as the decade ends.
Simple math:
Jan. 1, 2000- Dec. 31, 2009 = 10 years
the decade of consumption: doing it to losing it
the "owes"
Text Mess Age
Though not necessarily negative this works on many levels to describe a decade where so much of our communication and information is changing.
The Disaster Decade.
The events on 9-11-01 have colored this decade more than any other thing I can think of. The US reactions to the disasters of that day, the reactionary administration that presided and exploited fear of terrorism, the endless repercussions, and the psychic turning point it was for most Americans.
On a positive note: The decade has ended up with Americans who recycle more, buy less and care about helping others. I particularly see this in my kids and their peers as they pursue careers after college. Much less $$$-focused, more worldly, and much more accepting of non-white, non-heterosexual humans. This progress encourages me. (Though I may be in a little bubble of liberal idealism.)
I think it should be the age of Globalization, because never it time has an event that occurred in another country felt so close in ours. Due to the internet (facebook, twitter, skype), the common threat of terror, and global travel and curiosity, global events resonate like they never have before.
Positive... what a great ending to this segment.
For me it was the pulling of the world back to good feelings about the US by the election of an articulate and dedicated politician and social changer who also happens to be Black. Also, the loss of financial security may have caused many people in this ccity and perhaps the world to look at what's important in life. People may really be reevaluating what's important to them.

i like "The De-Enlightenment "
The Tsunami Decade, or to be cute: The Tsunam'oos, because it's been just one right after after, yes?
Oh, I like the caller's "Ought-nots"! That covers both the financial doings & the wars! And Carlos[32]'s suggestion does mine better (plus he beat me to it!).
The name for this past decade:
Text Mess Age :-)
This decade was one of lost opportunity which led to little progress.
Great stuff Bush fam, greedy dot-commers and high finance peops, and a generally self-centered, unreflective American populace (of which I have to admit I'm one)!!
or:
The Great Global Downturn
The Global Downside Decade
(everything bad goes global: terrorism, poverty, bad finiancial practices, disease, hunger...)
OK, what was good? We got rid of George W Bush.
Decades are 10 years long. There's still a whole year left of this decade. Simple math, people.
Just think. The 'aughts' is the SECOND decade of the BUSH 100 years war...
The WTF's...
1) the era of american freedom
2) the era of empirical collapse
3) it begins, again
4) n0 h0pe
The Dark Age or The De-Enlightenment
the oughtn'ts
da boom (911) & da bust (wall st) decade
the O-vers
I always thought "the double-o's" would catch on--after all, wouldn't all the James Bond fans support it? But even the Bond film of this decade was brought out in '006--they couldn't even wait till '007!
Beyond the numerical, I kinda like "the bubble decade," but it doesn't cover the war, only the financial mess.
The podders-
The Aught Nots!
The Big Bang
Boom Bust
Hi-Lo
Virtually Real
How about calling the '00s the "Double Bubble" decade, for the dot-com and housing bubbles which both burst in this decade?
The Bush 100 years War decade
The "Oh my God, Michael Jackson is Dead" decade.
Depression 2.0
The Oughts:
Ought to have dealt with global warming.
Ought to have stayed out of Iraq.
Ought to have eaten less and exercised more.
Ought to have stayed out of debts.
Ought to have voted Democrat.
etc.
i said the other day:
cheap plastic for cheap plastic
The BushSh*t Years
"the war mongering decade"
THE BUSH DECADE
For a decade full of regrets and missed opportunities: The aughta's
I like George's/1 but i'm not so sure about its shelf life!
how about generation amex (the era of debt), a play on generation x.
Charles Dickens said it best "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven, we were all going the other way."
"The Bush Years" work for me. So much for THAT dynasty.
It's The Naughties for sure. In 1999 hoping for a decade of fun, we launched Project Naughtie.
Sign our petition and we'll try to get this naming thing sorted:
http://projectnaughtie.com
Project Naughtie was written about in Wired:
http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/1999/11/32769
and it's now listed on Wikipedia under the Name of the Decade listing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000s_%28decade%29
While it didn't so much turn out a decade of fun, it's still an appropriate description for the bad behavior of this nasty little decade!
(It's still there, a web antique!)
10-Year Pity Party
More Naugties pre-naught-stolgia:
Remember girls wearing thongs, or 'Juicy' on their butts? Britney Spears being a Naughty Girl? Sorority sisters making out in bars to get guys' attention? Girls Gone Wild?
Fashion has shamelessly moved north in this recession era, showing off breasts and cleavage. Women are sporting 70s prostitute fashion like high boots and thigh-highs. Naughty!
I'm not original in the Naughties concept. Ten years ago, we were hopefully hoping for a continuation of the Clinton economic and sexual boom. We had no idea how bad Naughties could become

The NAUGHTIES!
First, in March 2000, we had the dot-com bubble burst after Investment Banks were hyping DogFood.com or whatever as a billion dollar company that will be a portal for everyone on the internet. They made quite a lot from that.
Then Enron and Worldcom showed us that accountants can be swingers, too. Enron hit a double as they shut California down for profit. Naughty!
Osama bin Laden and his associates were quite naughty mass-murdering 3000 people at work or flying in Sept 2001, and Dick and Condi and Shrub were dissembling to avoid their 'accountability moment.' And their hyping fear for political power was naughty, too. They also falsely hyped Saddam as the greatest threat due to WMDs, and they outed the counter-WMD operative at the CIA.
Poor George, he can't enjoy a vacation with all these CIA agents annoying him about Bin Laden Determined to attack USA buildings and planes. Then in 2005, those annoying FEMA folk bothering him with a storm in New Orleans.
Then the Investment Banks were back with mortgage brokers, hyping real estate while shorting them for more profits, turning stodgy insurance companies, like AIG, into gambling dens, and turning boring ratings agencies into cheerleaders. They cut themselves billions in bonuses, print more money that we have to pay for, and they are enjoying their new bonuses, bail-outs, and stock market bubble. Naughty!
The decade of Islam.
From this decade's starting crash to its ending crash, clearly the "noughts" (perhaps turned into "oughts")?
The "(B)Push-Button" decade ... Nobody cares how things are done, just as long as they are done... we have hit shows on the discovery channel, "How it's Made" for crying out loud, and I love them! I believe we are seeing a reflection of our past few decades of education and leadership in our modern era!
The Tipping Point Decade, when the trajectory of America turned inexorably down -- presided over by the worst president ever.
If those people can choose not to pay for abortions under the HeathCare Bill, why can't I choose not to pay for the war? Who's going to speak out for my intentions to not pay for a war I don't believe in?
"The Age of Confusion"
The Noughties.
The b'00merang years, for all the things that have come back to hit us: boomerang kids, baby boomer self-regard, dot-com and housing booms that turned ugly, the bloom of american ideological and military influence that turned to boom and bust, and the negligence of basing an economy on consumption. Boom has turned into boomerang.
