Yesterday the Supreme Court issued a ruling in the case of Ashcroft v. Iqbal. Alexander Reinert, assistant professor at the Cardozo School of Law, represents Javaid Iqbal who was held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and Nina Bernstein, New York Times immigration reporter, reported on the detainees.

I know of an orthodox jewish guy who went to the NYU islamic center and offered to escort Muslim women in hijab home so they weren't harrassed. If that is not a case for our capacity for understanding and reaching out to each other, i don't know what is.
New Yorkers are not xenophobic. New York is also one of the most solidly Democratic (blue) states. if we were so hateful we would be voting for the Republicans, known for their hawkishness, in droves.
The issue in the case was whether the petitioner plead sufficient facts to state a claim. The Court indicated that he failed to allege "intentional discrimination." This is a procedural decision and not a substantive one.
By writing "rules" for "enhanced interrogation", our government insured that torture would be used routinely, rather than in extraordinary situations on a case-by-case basis to be decided by the President. We "institutionalized" terror and Iqbal was one of many similar results.

Brian, please do not let your female guest tar all New York City residents with the torturer brush. Like others who lost friends and family in the dust of the World Trade Center, the last thing I wanted was for innocent people - or anyone - to be tortured in my name, with my tax dollars, in my boro, or anywhere else on the planet! It is obvious that revenge begets revenge in an ever-escalating cycle, and that people learn by example. Thanks!
I don’t accept your characterization that after 9/11, New Yorkers wanted to “round them up.” None of my friends felt that.
