Manhattan swept its homeless problem under the carpet, this past fall 2008. Manhattan closed a bunch of their facilities and moved displaced people to an already overcrowded facility in Brooklyn. I've seen more people on my street, than I have seen in years. I cringe to think of the gloating to be had tomorrow about "reduced" number of homeless in Manhattan.

According to the website, registration for volunteering is closed, or else the website is badly designed.

I hope they have all the people they need.

Are many of these people from Mexico? If not where are they living?
How is it possible for them to find shelter and not these natural born Americans?

What kind of housing are they getting people into? I know that frequently, people choose the street very rationally as opposed to going into dangerous shelters.

In my opinion, doing this survey in the middle of winter provides skewed results. During a cold weather emergency, the NYPD is required to make sure that the homeless are provided shelter. I think most homeless people know this, and hide away (or are sent to the hospital by the police).

Having said that, is it just me or are there more homeless people in the subways lately?!?
