I spend summers in the Adirondacks and have often heard Gillibrand speak on Alan Chartock's show on public radio's WAMC up there (much more left leaning and unapologetic about it than WNYC, by the way). I admit to not knowing her votes on issues of immigration and gun control previously and do not agree with them, but I have always been impressed by her and the views she expressed on that program. She is smart and articulate and seemed very liberal and pragmatic in the views she expressed. It should be noted that it is amazing that any Democrat is elected in this very right-wing region of the state. (I keep my opinions to myself while there in order to get along with my neighbors). I think we should give her a chance, she is crossing lines and has managed to get elected as a Democrat in an area that is downright hostile to liberal views. If you want to know her ideology, check out these past interviews on Alan Chartock's show.

I agree with asking Alan Chartock to speak about Gillibrand. In fact, why not invite him once a month to speak about upstate issues.

How about inviting Alan Chartock from Northeast Public Radio to discuss Gillibrand? He has interviewed her in depth several times. I believe he would give a realistic view of her.

Pavel #8, Interesting idea. We have compulsory insurance for cars. I wonder how much compliance we would get since the problem seems to be either illegal guns or guns in the wrong hands.

I wnt to comment on arms control. I think it is not government business to decide who can and who can not have a gun. However in order to prevent gun violence I suggest to require for any gun to have liability insurance the same way as we have for motor vehicles. I did not hear of any objections to liability insurance for cars.
Implementation of such insurance requirements will prevent gun running because insurance companies will not provide insurance to somebody who buys gun to sell them in other states or cities. They will also deny insurance to anybody who involved in criminal activity or who claims too frequently loosing his/her gun.
I think this arrangement may be supported by hunters and other lawful gun users and reduce gun violence. All people I presented this idea so far found it resonable alternative to government gun control.

I'd like to see her drop the "English only" stance.
Can't get rid of the 2nd Amendment without a Constitutional Convention easily. We should be able to sensibly regulate handguns.

I'm OK with Gillebrand because she supports small farms. That is a serious potential for upstate NY and an unsexy but vital aspect to our life. If you look at England you have bands of green around every town - we need to know where our food comes from and we should have access to food not bred to travel. Also we need not to be so alienated from her rural constituencies. They hunt. It is not the same thing as handguns. I think a lot of city people could do with a turn in teh country as something other than a tourist. I htink this is an interestign appointment, if she is someone who stands up to special interests. I don't know about that side of her.

I have an open mind with respect to Gillibrand. I just have a more open mind with respect to Andrew Cuomo.
Shame that Jennifer Dlouhy sounds more like Gillibrand's spokesperson than a reporter.
And how about some comments on Gillibrand's connections to some of the most corrupt politicians in state history? (D'Amato, Erastus Corning (3rd?), etc.)

Gillibrand should come out in support of Mayor Bloomberg's campaign against illegal handguns.
A few months ago there was a shooting directly in front of the door to my building. In one shooting on this block a cop was murdered.
The NRA should stick to protecting the right to own rifles, not handguns. Illegal handguns start out as legal, out of state guns
