Wait, wait...Carl's leaving? Bummer.
:-)
Thank the radio gods I will still hear that fabulous voice on Wait, Wait. Best of luck, Mr. Kasell...and thank you for being a happy part of my world all these years.
"Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" just will not be the same without Carl Kasell.
He could just hum and be recognized immediately.
Well, it might take a few seconds.
One of your respondents, Kate from Queens suggested that Kassel writes his own copy. Truly, a multi-talented personality. I am not surprised.
He will be missed.

The Onion [100]--Yep. I went back & did a wider search (on "NPR"), found the Corey story, came back here to correct myself, & found you already had! Well, my misremembering could itself be considered a tribute to Carl & that wonderful voice of his. (Just don't tell Corey.)
In a word: Mellifluous. I love to wake up to his voice in the morning. But I also love his "audio impressions and impersonations" on Wait Wait. Long live Carl Kasell!

grandpas voices rolled into one!

One word is enough: reassuring. No matter how bad the news, hearing Carl's voice made me believe we would get through it. Thank you,Carl!

DON'T RETIRE!
Carl's voice: a warm enveloping barricade against the onslaught of the day.
Mellifluous, engaging enunciator on radio!
i suppose the most relevant and complimentary comments i could make about carl (and this is REALLY complimentary!) is that he brings to mind all the years i listened to karl haas. the voice of qxr for years for a music school graduate who longed to cling to distinguished music and distinguished announcing. since "KARL" has been gone, CARL has continued to fill the void, with a unique and enjoyable tone!
congratulations, carl! ENJOY your retirement!
Carl Haas without the accent.
"The Don Pardo of News"
Alternatively:
"Don Pardo of the Quiz"
(It was Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me that made me think of the Don Pardo comparison. So maybe the latter is more appropriate. Carl K, ever the consummate professional, didn't ham it up reading headlines as delightfully as he clowned for the crowd at the Chase Auditorium. Happy retirement!)
CARL'S VOICE--BRUSHED VELVET
Carl Kassel has a National Treasure of a Voice! So glad he retains his "judge-ship!"
Head-turning voice
Not on my answering machine (yet)!

Karl's voice: a sonorous basso, reliable, near-perfect diction.
*If* Carl Kasell had played his cards right he could've been an actor? Nah. I think Carl played his cards exactly right!
His work on "Wait, Wait..." makes me think he must've appreciated The Onion's article (might be 10 years ago by now! can't find it on their website) reporting that Carl Kasell, after stubbing his toe, let loose a mellifluous string of cusswords! Carl, I'm glad you'll still be on "Wait, Wait...." By the way, the 1st time I had a look at NPR's website, the biggest surprise was: only one "l" in "Car-r-rl Kasell"!
The Take Out? Don't like it. Often they don't seem to know what they're talking about.

does Karl actually go to Chicago every week for "Wait Wait?"
how do you imagine will your successor be different than you?
First time I heard Carl Kassel on Wait Wait - it was like seeing your teacher in blue jeans for the first time - I was like- "Wow he has a sense of humor and joie-de-vivre!" For me he his voice has always had gravitas and says "pay attention: this is serious."
Also found out for the first time on your show page how his name is spelled! Always thought it was Castle - and so I always thought of him as a Knight.
I am not surprised he writes his own copy -- I've never suffered a cringe moment listening to him - always intelligent and dignified.
Good luck and enjoy retirement!
dry tone / old-fashioned / good-humored
I wonder what his travel routine on weekends is. Where does he live? Does he telecommute? Does he fly to Chicago? I wonder if he and Peter Sagel are in the same room,as it sounds. I had assumed he lived in Washington, but on Wait Wait he seems to be speaking from Chicago.
The reassuring voice of verisimilitude(did I spell that right?
Love his voice and him. He should teach/mentor younger broadcasters.
Did he ever sing? Take singing lessons?
Did he ever smoke?
Does Karl fly to Chicago every weekend to do "Wait, Wait?"

Sound of my childhood mornings.
I've always been impressed at how you could be a newscaster with false teeth so loose I can hear them clatter. Isn't there glue for that?
My early morning wake-up friend.
How do they GET his voice onto tbe outgoing message of people's home answering machine? Especially because many people don't have an answering machine anymore, just voicemail. I have always been so curious about that. Does he record it in a studio and they send a CD to the winner? Carl rocks!
Equivalent to James Earl Jones.

Calm, warm, granite wake-up call.
I remember my dad driving me to school in the early 80s, and we listened every morning to Bob Edwards and Carl Kassel (and Red Barber on Fridays). There are moments when I hear Carl's voice and I am brought back to the front seat of red Oldsmobile as I looked out the window and started to learn about the world.
Carl, enjoy your semi-retirement!
Carl Castle: 5 words to describe his voice -
Intelligent, wise, concise, brilliant, and connivingly hilarious

Thank You Sir.
Carl's voice is unmatched in any medium. His delivery is reassuring, without the irony and ego of most newscasters.
He will be missed, but I wish him a happy, comfortable and long retirement!
I have the honor of having Carl Kasell's voice on my home answering machine. I may never win the Nobel Prize, play on a World Series championship team, or be elected President of the United States, but how many Nobel Prize winners, WS winners, or Presidents have Carl's voice on their answering machine?
I too thought it was Castle. You and Noah Adams got me through 2yrs. of duty on Guam from 79-81.NPR the BBC = quality reporting. God save the King Kasell.
Carl:
You have always ensured that the news was presented with the appropriate seriousness and objectivity: qualities that are missing from any given TV news report. I only hope your successor can do the same.
Best wishes on your retirement.

Carl Kasell is the voice of NPR.
Sadly missed delivering the news,
fondly remembered in the eardrums of my soul.
I've listened to Carl for more years than I can count. What a voice; I am jealous each week when players win this voice on their home/mobile answering response. Until recently I always thought it was Carl Castle, he is a king.
Thanks for being a constant for all of us. And you deserve to be able to give up rising at 1:30 AM.
Your beacon of a voice and presence will be missed, thank you.
