What is most interesting is that later in the day, I DID hear the beginning of Obama's speech, and lo and behold, I did not hear a 'preamble' (as Brian put it) - but instead a detailed description of the economic DISASTER George W. Bush left behind for Obama to try to deal with.

In other word - surprise surprise, Brian was acting to protect the interests of George W. Bush.

I am really sick of Brian's concern trolling for the neocons and of the slimy tactics undertaken by he and his producers on their behalf.

I have been listening to Brian ever since he came on WNYC - and used to have the utmost respect for him - but ever since George Bush overhauled the CPB, WNYC is now nothing but a mild-mannered version of FOX News.

Solopreneurs are left out of the "Noble Equation". The small business paradox is that Solopreneurs do not qualify for any relief to help grow their businesses first, if there is no "Hiring Projection" in their business plan, assuming they have one.

As Ms Brady pointed out, most businesses, large or small, will not be hiring full-time, or even part-time, workers. They will first hire contractors-usually ex-employees first, then other contractors.

Solopreneurs, not in a position to hire anyone, must depend on helping each other, as contractors, providing that they are doing well enough to pay for the services.

Some States encourage the unemployed to start a business, and will offer some education and training.

Therefore, the Government creates another "Catch-22" scenario. Flood the market with Solopreneurs & Entrepreneurs to go out and compete for the meager contract assignments.

Who wins?

Brian, you asked what I would like to see. Maybe a better definition of Small Business. A more in-depth understanding of the nature, and dynamics, of the interaction, and inter-dependency, of all sizes of business.

We need "Leadership" to not only see, but also understand, the wide-angle - not the periscopic - view of business dynamics. Then engage a broad spectrum of representatives, from all related disciplines, to share ideas on creating a "New Business Model" for the greater good. Too altruistic? Ah,"The Audacity of Change"!

A small business owner, in an upper (personal) income bracket--as a successful business owner, and piller of the community--is in a position to create more sucessful businesses by empowering employees to take over ownership of said business.

Defining "small business" is a good idea. Less than 150 employees?

Ms Brady just dismisses the manufacturing sector in the US. We need to bring back some of the jobs in this sector. Brian should interview Senator Dorgin from North Dakota who is author of "Take this Job and Ship It"

the biggest obstacle to starting a small business is inefficiency and corruption on the local level.

If spending 125% of our income consuming is not the sustainable way to go, what is? What does a post-consumer economy look like?

I have to back-up the 2nd comment (Bobby G) - what happened to green jobs? That would be heartbreaking if that was just campaign talk.

Infrastructure (roads, bridges, potholes,and such) jobs are usually municipal and or union and not of much help to the average and majority of the construction workers.

With the housing boom completely busted, very little new homes, renovations or the like mean that construction is virtually dead.

There seems to be a disconnect between the policies of raising taxes on upper income individuals (many of whom are small business owners and entrepeneurs) and growing/maintaining small businesses.

The more my family pays in personal tax increases (health insurance surcharge, "war" tax, increased state income taxes, etc.), the less able my husband is to grow and maintain his small business workforce (his business has been really hurt by this downturn).

Most small businesses in the U.S. are organized as sole proprietorships, LLCs and subchapter S corps, and the owners are taxed on a “flow-through” basis to their personal taxes. As such, a capital gain tax reduction is meaningless for small businesses. Small business owners should get a direct cash payment--like the banks and cash for clunkers--to create jobs.

I have no problem with the business tax cuts, credit provisions and cap gains cuts. But, most of this only works once you have decided that there is a demand for your service and product. You are not going to pursue a business or expand capacity unless you see demand.

The way to generate demand is have a massive jobs program that can employ many people in one shot.

The problem with relying on the private sector/small business is that they will be based on individual decisions and assessments and you may not get a job growth turnaround in a massive way.

Secondly what is the survival rate of most new small businesses. From what I understand is that it is not very high. Also what kind of jobs are we talking about in a small business? Are we talking about waiters, receptionists, bus boys? Or are we talking about scientists, engineers, doctors, nurses?

Who declared this guy a great orator? Fatuous windbag is more like it. The only metropolitan area in the US under Obamanomics to see an increase in employment in the last 2 quarters has been Washington, D.C.
