Dave,

Football as we call it came from America and is played and fetished here as nowhere else, even Canada. Baseball is also an American invention but you find it all over the world, unlike football. I lived in Japan for over three years and baseball at ALL levels is more pervasive in their society than here, believe it or not. See the documentary, "On Kokoyayku", about national high school baseball competition, available on Hulu.

Graham (thrice repeated),

Mere harm to one's wallet is not an excuse to criminalize something. You don't get to throw people in jail because you feel what they do is stupid.

#6, J.C.-- The laws may seem puritanical in some cases, but at least they recognize the harm gambling often brings about.

Hasn't this ethos led to the mess we're in today as a society. The glamorisation of liars, cheats and thugs, cynicism and the death of ideals. Sound familiar, Wall Street?

Out of curiosity, is the author aware of any states where, strictly speaking, it's a crime to play even a low-stakes poker game in the privacy of your own home? Gambling laws, like other types of law, can be shockingly puritanical.

Doesn't "double down" refer to 21?

Brian- I believe "double-ing down" comes from black jack and not poker.

Football is America's sport, not game. You actually have to have some physical ability to play it, unlike poker.
