On a trip to Portland to visit my Sister in law I decided to take a 4 day diversion and head down to Mount Shasta for a bit of Californian mountaineering. The weather at the base was 85 and sunny. A day and 1/2 later I found myself lost in a snowstorm on top of the mountain with my guide no where to be seen..o degrees with high winds. well the bottom line is that all worked out well and I am here to write this but a few days in the sunshine looked pretty ominous for awhile there... bottom line: dont take any mountaineering expeditions lightly.. i'm a young person who has vacation in relatively dangerous places... burma for example... yes the idea of it was awesome, and i'm not sure if there is much you could say that would deter the type of adventurous young person your describing. the more savvy the better.

MY FIRST REACTION ABOUT THE HICKERS IN IRAN AND THE TWO LADIES THAT WERE IN KOREA WAS "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING THERE".THERE ARE OTHER PLACES TO ENJOY HICKING AND TAKE PICTURES...I SMELL A RAT.

There is another factor at work with the two in North Korea and the three in Iran. It is the "You can't do that to me! I'm an American!"
The arrogance of Americans abroad is something to behold. It is annoying at best. At worst, it is a direct affront to the people of other countries.
In the case of Iran, there is still another factor. The US has been sending troops and others into Iran as part of 'covert' operations. Iranians are understandably on guard with respect to Americans.

Now that universal health care is not going to happen, a walk to the store is potentially dangerous, let alone a vacation!
