William Falk, editor of The Week, rounds up some of the important stories that took place while the world had its eyes fixed on the conventions.
What other stories did we miss while we were in Denver and St. Paul? Comment below!

Re Occupy Wall Street segment: Did you see Samantha Bee's piece on Jon Stuart last night? IT described an absolutely hierarchical setup in Zucotti Park. There were the poor and low-born in the south of the park and the hip college intelligentsia in the North of the park. In the space of two months, an absolute class system was setting itself up. I would love to hear someone from OWS speak about this.
Thank you

A Question
How come a strapping young man,a former Penn State quarterback, couldn't find the strength to yell? He walked away and allowed the abuse to continue.
On a lighter note, I just wanted to comment on Google, since a caller mentioned Chrome.
Everything Google does is geared to increasing ad revenue. For example, with Gmail they scan your email and show you ads based on your discussion. Chrome is just another attempt to show you ads relevant to your browsing. Everything they do supports their ad revenue.
People should really read their EULAs (End User License Agreement) when they use a Google product. You basically give Google the right to do whatever they want with your content and activity (pictures, writing, blogs, browsing). Personally, I think it's giving away too much.
Norman, Robert, I welcome you back soon to the WNYC comments board, a bastion of right wing radio.
In the meantime enjoy the balance over at Democracy Now.
Best,
Barry
I was just reading The Week story on "Why MSNBC pulled Olbermann and Matthews," and I think I overstated how partisan it was.
They said (in attributed quotes) that Olbermann and Matthews had trouble separating opinion from fact, but they also said (in attributed quotes) that the same thing could apply to Fox News.
Guest suggestions on Iraq. Whom do you suggest?
Trevor,
Click on the link to The Week and you'll see that it's a right-wing propaganda organ.
They've got a right to promote their propaganda, but I too don't like the idea that a public radio station is using its own listener's contributions to promote the lobbying efforts of millionaires.
I personally prefer the coverage of democracynow.org, but I listen to Brian Lehrer's show because sometimes I can hear how the right wing defends some of their more ridiculous positions against the obvious challenges from their critics.
I can accept some right-wing propaganda on WNYC if they give a balanced report and also get people on the left.
If you're going to have the right wing of the Republican Party on regularly, then you should have the left wing of the Democratic party.
It's hard to tell whether a news source is fair to your side. I do think Brian has had a lot of right-wing guests. He did have Dennis Kucinich on. My impression is that it's weighed too far towards the right.
What's the right balance? Well, to start with, I think they should have fewer of the people who were wrong about Iraq, and more of the people who were right about Iraq.
The Dutch have an Intelligence agency?
Several comments have been removed or edited for violating the WNYC posting policy. Please remain civil!
So Ohio will go to Obama? With the caging?
That's generally seen as a benefit for Democrats this year since the new registrations refer mainly to 400,000 or so resident college students in Ohio. Obama holds a 2-to-1 lead over McCain among 18- to 34-year-olds, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll released last month.
I don't know if it's true, but the metro had a story on Sep 3rd that the "US [is] to attack Iran 'within weeks'"
"Dutch intelligence services have withdrawn a successful spy from Iran because the US is planning to bomb locations where the operative is working,..."
"...using unmanned aircraft."
Is it true? I don't know, but it was on the metro front page.
I think that Latino cuisine hybrid with falafel, some hummus, would be delicious and totally spicy.
Ok, sorry i thought you said you didn't watch any of it.
Thanks for clearing that up

Hezbollah. The Islamic fanatics of Hezbollah are rapidly infiltrating the tribe of the Wayuu. They are indoctrinating the members of this tribe, to convert them into Islamic fanatics in charge of disseminating the terrorist message that has already created chaos, death and misery in the Middle East. The Hezbollah group invading Venezuela is doing its work openly in the Venezuelan side of the Guajira Peninsula. They are disseminating, via Internet, a strategy "to change Venezuela," including:

Venezuela-Hezbollah ties
It wasn't denied.
Sounds like a logical fit.
Talk about Ron Paul's convention
Sarah Palin met with AIPAC despite having an anti-Semitic church.
Re: Venezuela and Iran having an American foothold to attack Jews:
Come on, didn't you learn in journalism school to be skeptical?
If not, didn't you learn from the WMDs and Iraq-al-Qaeda connection to be skeptical?
That LAT story was based on anonymous "intelligence" sources.
Here's my queston: Can you figure out whose interests would be served by putting out a story like that, even if it was false?
Bhutto's husband now PM of Pakistan.
to be an election in Canada.
ongoing situation in Georgia/Russia.
The 1.2 million displaced Indians was just overwhelming.
"India's monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, brings rain vital for the country's farmers but also massive destruction. Floods, mudslides, collapsing houses and lightning strikes kill hundreds of people every year."
This year was worse, at least they knew it was coming
The Hurricane Katrina anniversary came and went with little reflection on coverage of the devastation and displacement that still persists in New Orleans.
The unnamed US intelligence sources leaking to the LA Times about Venezuela-Hezbollah ties are as credible as those who used to leak about Iraq-Al Quaeda ties.
Asif Zardari became President of Pakistan.
This story got missed,
"China signs 3 billion dollar oil deal with Iraq"
"Iraq lurches forward"
Future of An-bar depends on the Shiite working it out with the Shia.
Good luck on that.
Also
"China signs 3 billion dollar oil deal with Iraq"
Good sign
Outside of the US Political spheres:
*Riots in Thailand
*Leadership battles in Pakistan
*Canadian Parliament dissolved
Wait, wait, wait a minute. Does fox tv underwriting wnyc mean that fox news corp (hack journalism network) have a say in the perspective of coverage..someone tell me this is false..
The biggest weather issue?
Not Gustov on the Gulf Coast.
Not the disruption of the US Open here in New York.
1,200,000 people who have lost their homes in India due to flooding.
1,200,000.
Yeah. 1.2 million people.
Could we be bothered to care?
Please discuss Rangel being caught evading $75,000 in taxes.

Missed Story:
India's Nuclear Supplier's Group exemption was granted. That's pretty destabilizing and could lead to a renewed arms race among China, Pakistan, and India.

It isn't a war, it is an illegal occupation. No matter whats happens it never should have happened.
Rudy Guilliano considers community organizing a joke--he laughed at the contribution community organizers make to our cities and communities. Who's the "elitist"?
No O, I saw a small bit of Obama's speech and knew better than to watch anything of McBaloney's speech (BTW, no relation to Caroline Baloney my congresswoman). I... we did not watch any of it. I did happen to see on this site the video of Kucinich's speech and listened to/watched both that and Brian's interview with him but did not listen to any of convention nor this show (checked in now and then for 2 minutes). I only watched Democracy Now coverage.
New Orleans will be flooded again (maybe as soon as this week)
The state has plenty of federal money to improve the levees but state corruption and incompetence has, as always, made the levees a low, slow priority.
Bottom line is if you have been flooded before then you need to be on stilts moving forward, or you will be flooded out again.
Robert,
You didn't even watch Obama or McCainn's acceptance speeches?
I listened to the first part of BL on Thursday and fell asleep when Cindy starting speaking.
Uh, excuse me, I and everyone, EVERYONE I know are in this world and NOT ONE of us watched either convention. So the whole world wasn't watching. LOL.
The problem with Russia & Georgia seems to have dissapated but one of the US people is promising the US will go to Georgia's aid.
Oil is almost back down to $100 a barrel.
The status of improvement projects in Louisiana/New Orleans. How much has been done and more importantly, how much more still needs to be done?
