The literacy rate among male Afghanis is about 30%...it's only 5% among women. This truly is a hopeless country and not really worth the lives of our soldiers. I certainly wouldn't send my kids there.

The concept to wage a "war on terrorism" is incorrect, mostly because terrorists, in almost all cases, do not represent a county. Attacking Iraq or even Afghanistan to kill terrorists is similar to invading the UK because its the home of the IRA.

I stumbled over this little morsel of apropos information.......
"The Afghans are a brave, hardy, and independent race; they follow pastoral or agricultural occupations only ... With them, war is an excitement and relief from the monotonous occupation of industrial pursuits."
Friedrich Engels, On Afghanistan (1857)
Vietnam redux......We cannot leave that country soon enough!

Can Mr. Burns answer if we can count on NATO for any support. I read in a book by Ahmed Rashid that they couldn't even muster up a few helicopters for Afganistan.
And, what about Pakistan? It seems that the new "pakistan taliban" wants to overthrow Islamabad.
Do we need to break up the whole area Afgansitan, Pakistan into mini ethnic states? And, make sure that the nukes are in the Punjab or Sindhi part of Pakistan?
