I didn't vote for Mike McMahon the first time he ran for City Council. It was a mistake, and when I saw him at a local greenmarket, I admitted my error. When McMahon ran a second time, I corrected that error. Here's why:

He's smart. He's thoughtful. And he's independent. Though he took some heat for it, he voted for a tax increase needed to balance the budget. It was the responsible thing to do.

While other Island politicians exaggerated the impact of Congestion Pricing on their constituents and withheld their support, Mike McMahon saw Congestion Pricing as part of a larger regional approach to Climate Change and Transportation and gave it his support. It knew the measure had only modest support among his constituents but voted for it anyway. It was the far-sighted thing to do.

After decades of barely mediocre representation by Republican Vito Fossella, it will be a pleasure to vote for Mike McMahon for U.S. Congress.

I noticed that Mr. Straniere talked only about Staten Island and not about Brookyn -- for example, he doesn't seem to care that his would-be constituents in Bay Ridge do not get the Verrazano Bridge discounts that the Staten Island voters get. As with his predecessor, Bay Ridge would go essentially unrepresented.

Diversity of voice? Are you kidding? Everything that he said was from the RNC script. An empty grandstander!
