A Second Look at The Safe Haven Law

Monday, March 03, 2008

Should the "Safe Haven" law apply to babies older than 5 days, after a 6-month-old was left at a fire station last week? Timothy Jaccard, president of the AMT Children of Hope Foundation, runs a hotline about the law and explains its rationale.

Regarding the communication question from #1: One caller was a Pastor who didn't know that there was a 5 day limit. The Commissioner said they have received babies older than 5 days previously. Whose miscommunicating and why is English the issue?

Because the law CAN'T prevent all neo-natalcide the Commissioner is accused of treating those babies that die as acceptable. On the other hand he is also attacked because more babies die from other causes.

Why do some people always think that if you can't solve the problem 100% your efforts in solving 80% are not worthwhile? Why is someone being accused of accepting the death of some babies when he is actually part of the reason why the problem has diminished? The law is not even that old. How many laws solve 80% of a problem in 10 years. How many deaths have you prevented?

Why do people have to pit the statistical results of death by infanticide against death by hunger and smoking? What does the fact that there are bigger problems in the world have to do about talking about this one. If we went by those guidelines the only topics Brian's show would cover are the war in Iraq, AIDS in Africa and world poverty and the end result would be that people would probably stop listening altogether.

If you're job in the world is to be a hammer, all you're going to see are the nails. It's easy to criticize, it's hard to actually create change.

which is a bigger problem? 16 in a year or 360 an hour? To me this a more of a way for politicians to gain some exposure by creating legislation for a hot button issue.

Why are we worrying about bringing down 16 deaths a year when a child dies of hunger every 5 seconds and there are hundreds of babies that die a year from mothers who smoke and drink during pregnancy? I understand that it is very sad when babies are left to die but is this are biggest problem?

Lets see, for starters we're talking about potential statutory rape, depending upon the age of the father of the child.

Yes the livery driver did commit a crime and should face charges, but I don't think he deserves to spend time in a prison amongst murders and rapists. There are rehabilitative crimes and murder, rape and child molestation are not rehabilitative.

Is Fernando Mateo supporting this man with TLC funds?

How can people be here for years and not learn to communicate?
