I greatly appreciated this interview. I have dealt for many years with a situation with my mentally ill sister and her mentally ill, drug abusing husband and their 14 year old son, my nephew. I am here to say that Child Protective Services is the biggest farce in the State of New York (as well as the rest of the country). A child has to be dead before they notice abuse. My mother and I have tried to extract my nephew from this situation countless times. CPS has proven itself completely useless even though my nephew goes without proper food, adequate clothing, and will probably be dealing drugs and in jail by the time he is 15. The bottom line is that he is being raised by mentally ill parent. If there is no obvious sign of physical abuse CPS just sits on their hands doing nothing. We continue to take every step to save him from this situation. I greatly look forward to your book, Dominic Carter, and Thank you Brian Lehrer for yet another incredible interview.

Thank you Dominic for reminding me (daughter of, sister of, babysittee of, sexual abuse survivor of - people who were at times violent and mostly scary - with diagnoses along the spectrum) that when it looks impossible, i need at times to acknowledge I don't have the same "wiring" as people who didn't have to rely on mentally ill people as children - no matter how spiffy anybody looks to others - and yes to go around obstacles - always an option and creative challenge - also I am so interested in the stuff on youtube (and terry gorss did a great interview) about Dr Jill Bolte Taylor, a brain scietist who survived a massive stroke and campaigns for the donation of brains for more research into mental illness.

NY1 is channel 1 on Time-Warner Cable systems in NYC (hence the nameO (it also is outside of NY)
They are NYC news 24 hours a day (with a little of outside news). They also have shows dealing with NY politics (Carter is a part of that) and NYC sports call-in show 11:30pm to 12:30am. One of the most important things they do is the NYC "weather on the ones" (weather at :01, :11, :21, etc.)
NY1 may be the originator of the summaries of what is in the newspapers segiment that we see on the cable news station (e.g., MSNBC).

I like this guest. He is very inspirational and he is right. I have a mentally ill relative and it has been a learning and growing experience. We never stop learning and growing no matter our age, if we do, something is wrong.

The guidance counselor incident doesn't disprove racism as part of his labeling you. He sounds like a black person who is especially hard on other blacks--I think some sort of Uncle Tom. That "advice" to you is not something anyone sane would say, or even think. Certainly not if it's their job. Your blackness obviously got under this guy's skin.

I am not use if it's his voice that is so irritating or his approach to asking questions as an interviewer. Please change to be more thoughtful with guests and change your tone for the sake of NY1.
Thanks Dom.
stop promoting Bloomberg, it looks lie NY1 is a political channel! :)

This is one of the rare guests that I would really like to have over for dinner. I am a NY1 viewer, but this is a different side of Dominic. He is delightful and insightful even though he is talking about abuse. If he can get over this, he is a role model for us all!
I heard this interview last year and am enjoying it again. WOW!

What a horrible guidance counselor!
My friend's daughter was recently ridiculed by her guidance counselor and we are seeking disciplinary action as well as a lawsuit against the counselor.

The first time I saw Dominic Carter I felt I'd like to have him as a friend. He's bright, genuine and jovial and plain ol'likeable. I didn't know there was a book now I'll have to get it. (I just don't like the 3 Wiseguys but I don't blame Dominic for them.)
