The two can be reconciled because most Americans, whether a democrat or a republican, are affected by the Bush economy (foreclosures, etc.)and most believe that this illegal war is to blame. Republican campaigns have traditionally centered on the social issues that divide us (abortion, welfare queens,) . Republican campaigns have been clever at pushing racism buttons (Lee Atwater's use of willie Horton in South Carolina). I think that Republican masses are finally understanding that they have been tricked into voting against their own financial interests. They are smarter now and are just as progressive as democrats.

you know, with the exception of JFK you have to go back to reconstruction to find a president who had come immediately from a legislative branch. nixon and lbj had both been VP's prior to being president.

it's not just since the 1960's that americans are skeptical of those from legislative bodies.
