Open Phones: Religious Holidays

Monday, September 17, 2007

Many religions are observing important holidays this time of year, from Muslims and Jews fasting for Ramadan and Yom Kippur, to the Japanese celebrating "Respect for the Aged Day". Where can we all find common ground among these many celebrations? We take your calls.

We should also remember today marks the day the Great Sky Turtle came unto the Earth and smote the Evil Dragon Smaug and the women were banished from the Great Harvest for uncleanliness and the Major Dominant Form took communion with the Seven Rituals of Naasaramath, who did smote unto the Earth the many bad enemies of some long tribe that lived a long time ago and has no bearing on reality today whatsoever.

Perhaps our religious callers can reflect on all the wonderful things science has done for them.

Your house, your job, your vehicle, your health, your community, your diet, etc.

Science, atheism and secular thinking: saving more lives than ANY religion, ever, PERIOD.

I am Japanese American, and another Japanese celebration this week is Tsukimi which honors the first autumnal full moon, similar, I believe, to the Chinese Lunar Festival.

It is interesting, but not surprising, how many cultures and religions celebrate harvest and renewal this time of the year.

You can't find common ground in earnest. Religion is poison to "common ground". There are the chosen by god, there are the faithful in christ and on and on, all others are infidels and whatever other names disparaging names assigned to those "others". The worst wars and hatred derive from religion. I would have to say if nowhere else, here Karl Marx had it right.

also September 21:
The Autumnal Equinox, is the second of the Harvest holidays. Mabon is a time to recognize what we have and to begin preparing for the coming winter.
