An off-duty officer shot a 25-year-old man after a road rage incident last weekend. We look at the details of the case and the clash of cultures behind the shooting with Al Baker, police bureau chief for the New York Times.
Yes gentlemen, my comment was regarding the mention of AS and merely that, is that ok? There was no comparison purported between the two incidents.

I think everybody needs to see Kara Walker's show at the Whitney. She might help us all see how deeply racist this society is. Every day I am more astonished by our utter lack of awareness/denial.

I have found police officers to be bullies. Recently my daughter, who is a young inter-racial person, was stopped in her car by a "mad-dog" police officer who gave her two tickets of which she deserved neither and dared her to contest them saying it would "make my day if I had to spend the day in court". She was going to plead not guilty, but I advised her to pay the tickets because he might get her at a later time.

in each of these incidents the cops were not in uniform (or marked vehicles) that identified them as cops.
in each incident, the victims were killed and in each incident the victims were unarmed.
do I have to mention the victims ethnicity as a component of these "incidents"?

This is not about AL Sharpton. This is about a young man driving on the highway being executed in cold-blood. the Media - Including Brian Lehrer usually focus on Al Sharpton in order to discredit or dismiss the civil rights or human rights abuses

We have seen an alarming number of murders and violent incidents since the beginning of this year involving off duty police officers and their aggressive behaviors. It is unrealistic for the average young man of color or other civilians to know that they are being confronted or intimidated by an off-duty cop. The mayor and the commissioner have to implement clear rules and sanctions against these officers who are basically committing 'REAL-TIME EXECUTIONS' when people going about their business do not automatically submit to their abusive demands and behavior. Off Duty cops should have a more conscientious code of behaviour when not in uniform

dear brian,
is officer sawyer being given a free pass on this shooting. other than an off duty cop it would be very rare for a new yorker to be legally armed with a handgun. this pass to carry a firearm carries with it extra responsibility. a person seated in a car who merely claims he has a gun is in my opinion not a situation of self defence. no gun was visible and a mere saying "i've a gun" does not give a person the right to kill another. only a cop would normally carry a gun. if sawyer did not have a service revolver would on the mere word of a gun he have the right to say strangle this other person? the release of sawyer on self defence explanation seems suspicious. especially given his leaving the scene for 19 hours.
always a good show...tomdickvijayali
