I am a immigrant of 10 years from Ireland and don't intend to return. With reference to Michael of Park Slope's comment: my husbands Great Grandfather immigrated to New York in the late 1800's, married, had a family and then returned to Ireland in 1907. I was shocked when I found out because I was sure that most immigrants stayed however, following some more research I found out otherwise.

You should be aware that this is not unique. According to scholars, such as Nathan Glazer and Daniel Patrick Moynihan, about 20% of immigrants to the USA from the late 19th century to 1920 returned to their home countries eventually.

I stayed here for years and years because I knew I would not be able to come back once I returned to my country. Today I am citizen here, which would never have happened if I had the opportunity to come back and work. I think that working visa is not such a bad idea.
