The Patriot Act: The Last Refuge of Scoundrels?

More than 150 communities have passed resolutions condemning the USA Patriot Act, a 2001 antiterror law enforcement tool that critics say is too intrusive. President Bush is an enthusiastic supporter. John Kerry says he wants to keep 95% of the act and "strengthen the rest".

“Energy independence” forms the next installment of the 30 Issues in 30 Days series. Both candidates are talking up the need to give up our dependence on foreign oil. We’ll look at the questions this raises – Is this achievable, what do we need to get there, and will it make a difference?
