In 1885, a Muslim religious figure known as the Mahdi led a successful insurrection against British forces in the Sudan. Three years later, a joint Anglo-Egyptian force under Lord Horatio Kitchener retook Khartoum and set up a colonial administration there. Today civil strife in the country can be partly attributed to that chapter in the country’s history.
