When she was born in Chicago in 1920, Janet Rosenberg's parents never expected their daughter to grow up to be President--much less President of Guyana. But in 1943 she met and fell in love with Guyanese dental student Cheddi Jagan and followed him to South America. They became labor activists there, eventually leading the country to independence from Britain. In 1998, Janet Jagan became Guyana's first woman president.
