Did you know?--When WNYC was founded in 1924, its record collection was so meagre it often borrowed LPs from the music stores along Park Row...Until soundproof windows were procured ten years later, the clanging and honking sounds of the streets and harbor outside the Municipal Building studios were considered the station's trademark...And until the station became independent of the city in 1996, it was periodically used as a tool of politicians, as when former Mayor Koch tried to control prostitution in the city by ordering the names of "johns" arrested for soliciting to be read on WNYC. WNYC Archivist Andy Lanset has picked the best of the past 78 years. Also: Chris Matthews on the American way.
