Radio Rookies - Manhattan

Radio Rookies is partnered with The Door in lower Manhattan, a multi-service youth agency that serves 8,000 teens each year. The core Rookies workshop began in August, with the new Rookies traveling to The Door from different neighborhoods across New York for the opportunity to create radio documentaries. During the first month of workshop the Rookies met 15 hours a week to learn interview skills and recording techniques, and to develop their story ideas. Then it’s time to record, record, record, sometimes more then twenty hours of audio that will whittled down into a 7-9 minute story. The stories will air on WNYC in February 2008 and will be posted here for streaming, downloading, and podcasting. (December 2007)

What The Rookies Have To Say

"Since I have started this program, I have learned to like different parts of radio- like learning how to edit using Pro Tools. But I still have my one and only love: the microphone." -Jordan Teklay

"I’ve learned that radio has a different way of editing than the way TV is edited, or the way we normally write. Radio Rookies taught me to be more expressive in my writing to get the listener to listen and feel what I’m talking about." - Shirley 'Star' Diaz

"Going into the interview with the Commissioner of the Administration for Children’s Services I thought it would be boring, but then after I met him I felt that he really cared for his job and for the children and I came out of the interview understanding the system better. And the interview turned out to be exciting!" -- Krystle Monclova
