Radio Rookies - Midwood

The Council of Pakistan Organization (COPO) hosted the Spring 2003 Radio Rookies workshop on Coney Island Avenue in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Midwood. COPO was founded in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, when members of the South Asian community in Midwood were facing threats and many residents had questions about their rights. COPO offers legal advice, preparation for citizenship tests, and job training to people of all ethnic backgrounds. Muslim, Jewish, and other teenagers get together once a week to play basketball there. COPO's basketball program is aimed at bringing together the diverse neighborhood. "If the kids get to know each other now, they won't start fighting when they are older,” says COPO program director Jagajit Singh.

About the neighborhood :

In recent years Midwood has become the home of a growing South Asian community. Pakistani shops and restaurants selling halal meat can be seen on and around Coney Island Avenue. The majority of the residents of this Brooklyn neighborhood are still Orthodox Jews, though. Famous New York filmmaker Woody Allen grew up here, and even parking meters get a break on Saturdays during the Jewish Shabbos (day of rest). Coney Island and Brighton beaches are just a few stops away on the Q or F trains, but insiders take their bike on the Ocean Parkway bicycle path, America's oldest bicycle greenway.

Radio Rookies on their neighborhood:

Rizwan: I like my neighborhood because of the people. They look out for each other. My favorite things to do here are playing handball, football and baseball.

Munir: Midwood is different than any other neighborhood because of the people. It's exciting and the community is like a family. It's a great place to play handball because there are no cracks on the court.

Sophie: Living in Midwood, I have easy access to education and a good lifestyle. Midwood is diverse - My family's Jewish, there are Italians, Muslims, Christians, everything - people from all over the world. I like that I have friends near my house. The worse thing is that Coney Island Avenue is really dirty and disgusting, especially the open trash bags on the sidewalks.
