New York Public Radio and Montclair State University Announce Joint Media Partnership

University to become headquarters of NYPR’s New Jersey Public Radio News

New York, NY / Montclair, NJ, May 15, 2012
– New York Public Radio (NYPR), one of the nation’s premier public radio franchises, and Montclair State University, which offers educational programs in communication, broadcasting, multi-platform journalism, and digital media, today announced a new partnership that will expand and deepen NYPR’s service to New Jersey while also leveraging the student talents and faculty capabilities of the University’s School of Communication and Media.

The joint initiative is being launched, in part, through funding provided by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

NYPR, which comprises WNYC, WQXR, and The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, created New Jersey Public Radio (NJPR) in 2011 when it purchased four former NJN stations from the state, extending NYPR’s reach from 60 percent to approximately 72 percent of the state’s population. Montclair State will serve as headquarters for NJPR News, which will produce content for NJPR and WNYC, as well as for other radio and online outlets throughout the state. Montclair State will provide broadcast studio space and production facilities, and will collaborate with NJPR News to provide student internship opportunities and support for expanding New Jersey-centric news and public affairs programming.

“When New York Public Radio launched NJPR last year, we vowed to extend the reach of our already significant news coverage of New Jersey,” said NYPR President and CEO Laura Walker. “We are delighted to expand our presence in the state through this exciting partnership with Montclair State University. The NJPR News bureau will better equip us to produce the kind of in-depth news and public affairs journalism WNYC is already known for among New Jerseyans.”

“Montclair State University is extremely pleased to provide a New Jersey home for the NJPR News bureau,” said University President Susan A. Cole. “With a strong history of preparing media industry professionals and growing programs in the field, this most recent media collaboration further enhances our academic programs within the School of Communication and Media, providing our students with invaluable hands-on learning in a professional, on-campus setting.”

“The people of New Jersey are the real winners here, and I commend Laura and Susan for joining together to serve the state,” stated Chris Daggett, President and CEO of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. “As an organization that supports the innovative use of media to educate and engage the New Jersey public, the Foundation is proud to be the first to show its support. We hope and expect that other foundations and organizations will be equally supportive of the efforts by NYPR and Montclair State to enhance the journalistic landscape in New Jersey.”

The collaboration between NYPR and Montclair State is the second in a series of significant media partnerships that the University has established in recent months. In late 2011, the University became the newsroom headquarters for NJTV, New Jersey's public television network, and began broadcasting NJTV’s nightly news program, NJ Today, from its DuMont Television Center.

New Jersey Public Radio News covers New Jersey news, politics, and public affairs. The managing editor of NJPR News is Peabody Award-winning journalist Nancy Solomon, who has reported on New Jersey for 10 years, including stories on the achievement gap in a middle-class suburb, the state’s foster care system, politics, and the redevelopment of Newark. David Furst, the morning drive host for the four NJPR stations (Trenton 88.1 FM, Sussex 88.5 FM, Netcong 89.3 FM and Toms River 90.3 FM), provides coverage specific to those stations and their audiences. Recent coverage from NJPR News includes daily coverage and analysis of the Tyler Clementi trial, the use of technology in New Jersey classrooms, and the fight over nominations to the state supreme court.
